Just picked up a 350VA APC UPS for $30.00 CAD at the Futureshop... great deal! I've never seen one that low before, and I've been after one since I put my little desktop machine together. It's not much, but it should be plenty for my computer to weather brownouts and let me save things when the power goes out entirely.

I also picked up a Razer Lachesis for my boyfriend for Xmas. Hope he likes it!

this is one of the FEW things that I'll agree needs breaking in, since its very physical.

right now it sounds quite nice. good bass response and can handle lots of power (I have a pimeta on steroids driving it). it took about a month of backorder waiting but the 650 elements came in a huge box and they were easy to install:

net cost of the driver upgrade: $90 shipped

I am exploring the Reel to Reel market and trying to decide if I should go all out and have one of the units customized and set up by the Bottlehead guys.

I got the Otari off of E-Bay and found the whole Vinyl archiving to Reel to Reel to be pretty interesting and the sound to be great out of the unit. I wanted the Technics RS-1500 but they are hard to find and typically priced much higher than the Otari.

Yesterday I spotted a mint RS-1500 on Craigslist for the measly sum of $300 and it was mine. Beautiful piece of gear in excellent shape. Came from a NPR producer that had used it to transfer old radio shows over from his collection.

I can understand if you already have tapes you need to copy-out.

but can you explain to me why this would be a better recording device than, say, a DAT deck or direct to laptop via a good a/d and spdif card?

just curious.

I do like old gear but I would NEVER save data to analog format. never again, myself.
