I've recently bought some PSB M4U 2's and was wondering if I would notice a big difference using an amp with them? I've been looking at a Fiio E17 or E11. I could also use the Dac in the E17 on my PC or Laptop. I travel alot for work so being portable is a must.

The M4U 2's can be used passively and are only 32ohm impedance when used like that. In active and noise cancelling they are 10k ohm impedance.

I'm not sure how that would effect using an amp? I would probably only use the amp in passive mode.

Thanks for your time,

You just have to decide how you want to run the setup. If you want to run a true portable setup with no extra amp then the amp in the headphones works very well.

If you want to run them off a desktop amp then make sure they are in passive mode. You do not want to run them on an amp and use the one in the headphones.

As for which setup sounds better you have to decide for yourself. I run them using the built in amp and think they sound superb, and am not inclined to amp them...yet
