Dvořák: Carnival Overture | Jakub Hrůša and the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg

This is a particularly fast-paced interpretation of Dvořák’s “Carnival Overture” – performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg conducted by Jakub Hrůša on the occasion of the International Classical Music Awards 2022 at the Philharmonie Luxembourg.

Prepare to be carried away! The Carnival Overture by Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) belongs to a trilogy of concert overtures written by the Czech composer between 1891 and 1892. In the three overtures, he was attempting to describe great human emotions or states of mind. This one was originally titled “Life” – and it shows, since it is bursting with energy. At the premiere in 1892, all three pieces were played together, but then Dvořák decided to present the overtures individually and rename them. “Life” became “Carnival”, and you can imagine the hustle and bustle of crowds at a large festival when listening to this overture.

Jakub Hrůša is a Czech conductor who was appointed Music Director of the Royal Opera in London in October 2022, a job he will take on full time from September 2025. He is still Chief Conductor with the Bamberg Symphony and Principal Guest Director of the Czech Philharmonic and Principal Director of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. He is also active as a guest conductor at numerous other concert halls worldwide. At the 12th International Classical Music Awards, Jakub Hrůša won the prize for “Symphonic Music” for a recording of Anton Bruckner's “Symphony No. 4” together with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.
