PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

I like the unconventional design as it would be fine in my shirt pocket during my commute. I've already given loads of cash for the Geek Wave, though, so I won't be getting this. I hope it sounds good. Carry on with the needless bashing.

Not to bash, but I got no word of mine shipping in October as originally promised.

Pedram Abrari said that Ponos began to ship on 30th October, 2014.

He said emails are to go out today 1st Nov. to those whose Ponos are en route. No doubt those who get them will let us know when they do.

The point is, LosLobos, that an enthusiast will wait and see and not judge before the product is on the market.  Your statements are made from a place of ignorance, just like mine would be if I said "It's great!"  Both are equally stupid statements at this point.  And yours are simply to fan the fires of negativity.  Tiresome and immature, if you ask me.

It looks rubbish, it doesn't have WiFi, it's menu is basic and its main selling point is high resolution music, which can't be proved with science to sound any better than redbook if the same mastering source is used. Bit of a no brainer for me.

+1. Thank you well said.

Good you made a decision to not have anything to do with Pono or this thread.

From the comments both on the Kickstarter campaign and the ponomusic website, it looks like the first batch of Ponoplayers that have been sent will get to their owners on either Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Hopefully, in that batch there are some head-fi veterans that could give honest and relevant reviews.

I'll receive mine before mid-November, but am new to the high-quality music community (will be my first high-res music player), and just bought a pair of Audio-Technica M50X to be able to enjoy my player once I receive it. So I won't be able to really add to the discussion here, but will make sure to at least give you my impressions, for what it's worth.

On a side note, I don't understand the Pono bashing here. People, we're so close from knowledgeable people in this field getting their hands on the device, why would you make such strong assumptions on the quality of it (either good or bad) when nobody has ever owned one yet ?
I agree they didn't handle their communication right towards the end, but a few weeks of delays is actually pretty good for a Kickstarter project, I honestly didn't expect to receive my October reward before early 2015.

My problem with the campaign is the marketing of HD resolution music. The resolution itself makes no difference, the masters do, yet the campaign doesn't directly acknowledge this. You can take a 24/192 master and downsample it to 16/44.1 and still have the same sound quality in an ABX test. And even if you can hear a difference (which is probably unlikely), both versions, if it is a proper studio master, will probably sound a lot better than the original CD master(s).

That's funny:

I can't reliably hear a difference between 16- and 8-bit audio; how ironic. XD

Sound quality is my top priority even for portable player, but it would have to be pretty magic sounding to consider this yellow brick. Im pretty interested what will come up from this.

can be found some experiences from people who listened it and are not payed for marketing? ordinary people could try it a few times on some events, right?

Which one did you order? I was a very early for the Patti Smith version and haven't heard anything yet...
