Most of the times I download it. If I consider it good, I get the album new or 2nd hand. Then rip it using EAC + Flac Frontend.

I get them from cduniverse.com and use either EAC or dbpoweramp

Buying CDs and occasionally an LP or two. I like the physical mediums so I'm not sure if I ever can buy from a web store even if they were in CD-quality or better.

I seek the CDs from auction sites, used and preferably old presses, where the loudness war has not had large impact. It's too bad it's almost always some recrappened, er remastered stuff you get when buying new CDs.

And then I rip them using EAC: Exact Audio Copy.

Usually one of these ways:
* Buy CD -> Rip to Apple Lossless
* Download lossless music -> Transcode to Apple Lossless

1. Hear about new band/artist from friend or music community.
2. Seek out and "test drive" an album or two by said band/artist (last.fm is great for this purpose).
3. Buy CDs new or used off the Internet for a pittance.
4. Rip with EAC, encode to high-bitrate MP3.
5. Enjoy.
