I purchased a splitter to plug directly into my soundcard in order to be able to plug both my 2.1 speakers and headphones in at the same time. I do this because the front headphone connector carries very audible noise (I assume the cabling isn't shielded).

Rather than have to reach behind my tower under my desk and unplug my 2.1 speakers, and then plug in my headphones, I thought that a splitter + M/F extension cable would allow me to leave my 2.1 speakers permanently plugged in with the ability to plug the headphones into the extension, but when I do audio comes out of both the speakers and headphones.

In other words, my computer does not recognize it as simply plugging in headphones (which would mute the 2.1 speakers).

Anyone have any idea as to how this could be accomplished?
