Two questions:

1. Plainview 9.6V batteries are $10 a pop. huh? Any way I can get them cheaper? Do I need a dedicated charger or will any old one do?

2. Does connecting a AC to 26V DC power supply require DIY work?

Thanks in advance for the replies

I haven't seen them cheaper. You can use any NiMH charger, but the dedicated one at Thomas Distributing will give you the shortest charge time (8.5 hours)...the second most powerful NiMH charger Thomas has will take over 18 hours to charge them. I've posted the formula I got from Plainview for computing charge time in the thread on rechargeable batteries. The charger's another $10.

Someone else will have to try to answer #2
