the only advantage of new ones is that the first few pages generally ave a lot of photos, unlike the last few on this one.

Me as well. I really don't see a reason for starting a new thread with the same content.
It seems to me like it's just done so whoever does it can have the #1 post in a thread.

Ditto!
Until Jude fixed the forum some time last year it made sense to split the long threads. As the page history (1-400++) did not wrap, leading to pages several times as wide as the browser area. But since that was fixed I don't see the meaning..
