I can tell you that it's not by choice. I don't think I'll ever buy an amp for a portable device but if I had the money I'd be buying phones way more expensive than $180 dollars.

Depends on how you define "portable". I don't listen to this set up while I'm running or walking. But I do carry it around nearly everywhere I go.

It is a 100% battery powered set up, though.
