Anyone know of a headphone in this approximate price class that beats the X2 on soundstage (width, depth, height) and meets or exceeds the X2 on bass?

Let me know if you find any

That's basically what I asked 2 pages back as well. Doesn't seem like it. Have to go up in price.

I asked for smooth highs as well. Maybe if you are okay with harsh highs it would give you more options.
How about the he400?

I've already got the "harsh highs" with the DT-990, though I don't actually find them harsh, just bright. He400 seems so uncomfortable that I'm not sure it's worth trying. He400i seems to have solved the comfort issue but lessened the bass.

Interesting aside: the DT-990 (2005 version) thread reads so much like this X2 one, at least for the first few dozen pages. I guess both have held flavour-of-the-month status. Considering the mixed regard for the DT-990, I wonder how the X2 will be viewed in a few years.

Sorry, didn't see your other post where you already mentioned the he400.

Wondering about that as well. At innerfidelity Tyll was rating the x2 higher than hd600 so that's saying something.
That could also just be flavour of the month for him too I guess.

I noticed the ue6000 was rated best closed portable when it was new and costed 200, now its 60 and no longer on the wall of fame..and I guess nobody is really talking about it either.

The HE-400 does not beat the X2 in sound stage or bass IMO. At least on my current equipment. There's some speculation that I need more power, I'll find out next week when my Magni 2 Uber gets here.

And as far as comfort, the X2 is more comfortable but I don't find the HE-400 uncomfortable at all.

Yep, the Philips Fidelio X1

If I can get my hands on the X1 for cheap, I'm definitely going to try them out against my DT-990. I'll still wait for the X2 and give that an audition, but at depending on the timing it may be going up against its former self in the X1 (if the X1 dethrones my DT-990 for movie sound).

If it helps at all, I went through the HD600 to get to the DT-990, and now I've got my eyes on the X2 (just waiting for a sale to offset the terrible Canadian dollar). The HD600 lacked bass and soundstage, both of which I found in the DT-990, but I can't stop being curious about the X2. I wrote off the he400 due to discomfort.

I just recently got my X2s to replace my year old DT-990s and I couldn't be happier, IMO they're better in every way. Bass, treble, comfort, soundstage.

Been using new X2 for a week now, finding it pretty warm overall. Decided to try it with my dragonfly dac and objective 2 amp and wow! Now I am hearing what all the positive reviewers are hearing!! This little 32 ohm headphone likes some juice:)

It likes the dac =D
The dragonfly, if i'm not wrong, is pretty neutral, thus improving the x2.
