You could also try JVC SZ-2000. They are the world's most extreme basshead headphone right now. Literally shakes your head with bass!

TH600/900 are indeed somewhat strident.   But people overlook this due to their bass quality. SZ-2000 surpasses them in quantity though.

Oppo PM-3 will be cheaper (USD 399, don't know Europe price yet). But it will be closed-back planar magnetic.

I only use headphones when I'm on computer or when I'm outside. When I do stuff at home, I use my speakers.  I recommend Dali Kubik (Free+Xtra). You might enjoy them more while painting. And they can fill a big room. Dali is a Danish company so prices are not high in Europe. They have their own amplifier and dac inside. You just connect them to computer by a usb cable.

As an amp/dac with X2, Explorer2 is an affordable but great sounding option.

It's impressive how the sound improves over the first ten hours of burn in. The sounds now is more controlled in general, sounding way better. I was expecting bigger soundstage, though. Maybe it improve with a better amp.

Anyway, if X2 is the better headphone under 500usd, this hobby that I get into it's too expensive :|
So it's of the road for me on phones. Can an amp really make it even better the X2 sounding?

Yes. I found that out of all my sources...Samsung Galaxy 5 phone, iPod touch, iPod nano, Sandisk Sansa, Kenwood stereo reciever, Little Dot 1+ amp, and the JDS Labs cMoy...the last three sounded MUCH better than the first four with the cMoy sounding best.

Do the X1 earcups touch the base?  I was looking at these as well but the stand seemed a bit low and designed more for headphones with retractable headbands. Might actually be worse for the X2 given that the headband is bigger.

I think the X2 is the best sounding headphone in its price class. A good dac and amp can make it sound even better but the gains in sound quality vs price paid might not be worth it for some. This hobby, like someone pointed out earlier, is one that has diminishing marginal returns...

Personally I might play around just a little with the 2k to 16k just to bring the highs up ever so slightly. For my ears the bass and mids are already awesome so I don't feel any need to mess with those. Honestly, I don't hear 16k so I probably wouldn't even mess with it...lol.

Thank you for this. I've been trying to decide between the X2, dt-990, he400, hd650, and the k712. Starting to feel much more confident in the X2's for my next open backed headphones. Now I'm gonna have to choose between the shure srh1540s and the th600s for my closed backed ones.

If it helps at all, I went through the HD600 to get to the DT-990, and now I've got my eyes on the X2 (just waiting for a sale to offset the terrible Canadian dollar). The HD600 lacked bass and soundstage, both of which I found in the DT-990, but I can't stop being curious about the X2. I wrote off the he400 due to discomfort.
