Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone
Dec 19, 2009 at 7:23 AM Post #46 of 209
After about ten hours burn-in, I am very happy with this little amp. I opted for the standard G3 over the T7 as I am used to a more analytical sound. Does it sound as good as an earmax? Dunno. Is it worth a hundred fifty bucks? Hell yes. The build quality and features are surprisingly good. Stock tubes sound very nice indeed. So far I agree with other reviews. It's best with natural musics; Classical, acoustic, etc. It still sounds great with more processed/electronic musics but has an unfamiliar frequency response for those sorts. I like it, others may not. It also has a very low level of noise.
I'm letting some Phillips/Mullard PCC88 tubes burn in overnight and will compare the difference.
My setup: Computer (.flac) -> EMU404USB DAC -> G3 Phenix -> ATH-A700

It's a sweet looking amp. I'm looking forward to more impressions, I would like to know how it will drive harder to drive headphones like HD600 or Kx00, but I guees we need more time.

I've started using the PCC88 tubes from Phillips/Mullard and they do work great, so add that to the list of compatible tubes. It opens up a lot of normally expensive options. I got this set of three for twenty USD and have seen new Telefunken sets go for as little as fifty on eBay. These Phillips tubes are magical for piano stuff but exaggerate the odd frequency response for rock and electronic stuff. Highly recommended for classical listeners. A recommended experiment for anyone else since they're so cheap.

Myrdin, thanks for your impressions and the pics. Not much info on these amps but they sure are tempting.
As far as I could gather the G3 is a Morgan-Jones implementation with the 3xE88cc/E88cc tubes whereas the G3-T7 has stayed closer to the Earmax Pro tube set with the single 12at7. How the two differ sonically would be nice to know.

Hope you enjoy the amp, and keep us updated on the tube rolling

I can't wait to get my hands on one. I'm not sure if I should mimic the Earmax or just stick with the stock G3-T7 tubes.

Price on Taobao (Original seller) is not include tubes.

The manufacturer says that the T7 has higher tube distortion levels (sounds more "tubey"). Therefore, the normal G3 is probably a better option for those that want a relatively accurate reproduction of the source.

Hmm Seems like I'll want the stock tubes then.
