Chicken...

Sorry to say that I haven't heard a D265... any idea what year it was made?

...Oh, btw... the D211 has finally been added

duncan,

just finished reading your update. since it seems you're the expert on sony portables here, hope you won't mind if i shoot a couple of questions to satisfy my curiosity. so here goes.

you described the D-211 having a backlight on the lcd, something that was discontinued on sony portas after the D-25S. my recently acquired porta, the D-147CR, also has a backlight, which operates similarly to the D-211. any idea what year models have backlights on the player's lcd?

from your reply to my previous question that my portable is a derivative of the D-141, which was manufactured in 1993, a check on my owner's manual showed that the manual was printed in 1995. is it possible that the production of the 141 family lasted two years, or my player is from a different era altogether?

thanks.

p.s. while i addressed my query to duncan, everyone is welcome to reply. thanks again.

Durian...

Sorry for not replying sooner

I can really only comment on players that i've heard... or judge the year of manufacture by the model # (they went up quite consistently from 1993 onwards)... so I aplogise if I was wrong on the D147CR...

...Maybe the 147 has the backlight for use in the car at night-time... I really don't know...

What do you think of its sound quality??

Oh... and I may do one final update to the review, adding in the D11 and D111... but after that I think i'll finish... its probably very tiresome to read now, with so much there... (unless of course you want it to carry on in its current form??)

...Maybe I could do a classic review part two or something... time will tell

discman worth hearing. part 1.
D-100, D-J50 (the thinnest discman, except D-EJ2000, excellent built quality!) D-303, D-515.
part 2 will include: D-Z555, D-311, D-777, D-EJ01

Pelikan,
Nice pics on those legendary. I have the D-303 and owned the D-515 for a while. Both are very nice. This is the clearest pic for D-J50. Do you own all these? I still own many of them.

Sony D-515 (1992), Sony D-802 (1996), D-464 (1998), and D-E805 (1998) also have backlight. D-464, and D-E805 have greenish color, while the older models have amber color. Many car discmen have this features.

among the legary sony I own, I like D-J50 and D-777 more. Simply because they are so beautifully built. You might have better sound from D-Z555 and/or D-303.

Purk, yes, I own them all.

Pelikan,

I heard most of the legendary Discmans, but how about the DJ-50? You have to see D-E900/905 to appreciate the definition of PCDP masterpiece.

Purk,

D-303 has better sound than D-311 and its better built brother D-J50. I had D-905 before. But my view is that D777 is better than 905. But if you want the best sound, you will have to move to desktop machine.

Pelikan1931...

The 303, you say its better than the 311... is that from the line out do you mean? - the 303 that I auditioned sounded very dark, very closed in through its headphone output... thats not to say its a bad thing, partner it with a bright set of cans, and you've probably got yourself a killer unit with the 303...

...anyway, will everyone please shut up about how great other CD players are!! - I'm trying to cure myself of this PCDP collecting illness that head-fi has passed to me, and all you guys are doing is fuelling it... making it worse!!

Muhahahaha... keep up the good work!

Didn't you mention a D-3 and a D-34 you were getting?

You find the 303 dark? That's interesting - I think it sounds quite open and detailed, maybe lacking some warmth...

no need to apologize, Duncan. after all, it wouldn't be fair to expect you to know each and every discman manufactured.

hmmm...tough one. i'm neither an audiophile nor a person blessed with a pair of golden ears. so i hope a pseudo-review from a casual listner would be acceptable. so here goes.

i haven't really done extensive listening on current models of portables. when i was auditioning a couple of sonys and panasonics to replace my old porta (Technics SL-XP300) that broke down, i stopped just after a few seconds as i find thme too thin. after weeks of searching in smaller shops, i finally found the D-147CR.

using my old mini headphones (sony MDR-022) with the D-147CR, i found it a bit slow and slightly sibilant. when i tried a fresh from the box senn HD497, there was a big improvement. slowness was gone, while there was still a light sibilance, it was much less. right know, i'm using the interconnect (2 rca - 1 mini stereo) that came in the box to connect my porta to my head amp. i'll be doing some experiment if changing my interconnects will further improve the sound one of these days.

thanks for your input, purk. my D-147CR has an amber (or orange?) backlight on the unit's LCD. no backlight however, on its credit card-type wireless remote.

...I'm now on the lookout for a D211 beater... I wonder how easy that'll be to find...
