i'm interested in a good PCDP with a digital out (coaxial prefered)
to use with ART DI/O DAC (which i'll soon buy).
i want it to sound real good from line-out and decode mp3 really good.

what are my options?
Art users: do you have special recommendations?
some types i have to avoid? (i read about the "lock" issue)

and a bit off topic:
what are the MD models that also have digital output, and their line-out is really good?

Unfortunately, a PDCP with the DIO do not blend together. I looked into it a while back myself. The DIO needs 9V AC, not DC, so it's not portable. Also, there are no coax output PDCPs to my knowledge, only optical.
I never ever had problems with the 'lock' issue, in fact, I don't even know what it is.
I have a sony ns500v dvd/sacd/cd player with coax o/p, now discontinued. you might be able to get the progressive scan version for ~$200.
Otherwise, I'd say go with a <$100 PDCP and save your money.

ah..it's no problem

i want it trasportable, not portable.
so..where are all of the good PCDP's we talked about?
(optical out)

also to add, i would like to hear options for such players that the line out ISN'T very good! (maybe would be better for money)
reliability - the best!

To use the DI/O you'll want coax out.

Denon DCP-150
Optimus CD-3400
Kenwood DPC-72
Kenwood DPC-721

None of these will do mp3.

ok first to clear things out: since i'm going abroad, my intention is to build the smallest hi-fi setup possible, that will fit into a suitcase. i choose a PCDP because of its size and trasportability, not portability. for portability i have MD too.
the converter does'nt operate on batteries, if that's what you ask.

damn!
is my question so hard that i can't get an answer for 4 days?

i don't want a DAC+amp! (i'm getting EMP, so i'll have art di/o, quite small)
and this is not the discussion here!
i need the PCDP!
non of the answers in this thread hits the spot!

Sorry. I thought you were also looking for the smallest overall setup, including amp as well. I think the Sostenuto is a real option to think about if overall transportability is a concern. Quote:

Hirsch addressed the question about PCDP's with coax-outs which would not require a converter to the DI/O. More current players with optical out will, as you pointed out, required a converter of some kind (see thread on that). One of the least expensive new models you can get nowadays is the Sony DJ-E721 for around US$80 or so on the Net. I use one daily with my Benchmark DAC1 (which is an amp/DAC combo too, but more expensive). Sony's latest top of the line models have optical outs too. Hope that helps.

Nope. Just regular redbook CD's. I don't think their is currently any portable cd/mp3 player with digital output (optical or coax).
