Ah, not so critical listening then, fair enough. I don't think anyone has proven conclusively that the 716 and 616 have the same drivers, it seems even altec couldn't say when asked once before. I felt the 716 had a definite edge in HD mode over the 616, but in Bass mode they sounded quite similar, slightly more bloat on the 616 perhaps, or rather just slightly tighter bass on the 716. I still think the 716 improves greatly with an amp though. Like my K340's, they sound good with a decent solid state amp, but better with a more powerful discreet amp like the G-lite amp. I guess in the end it's all horses for courses
