I meant flat shiny side with SMALL opening towards ear or other way around. It's kind of lame that this isn't covered in the manual.

On mine, the shiny side is on the smaller opening so that end points in my ear. I just got mine yesterday and they sound very good...even for $100 iems. The fact I paid less than $20 makes them spectacular!

I tried it both ways, shiny side towards ear sounds better to me, and it's ten times easier to get on/off, so that's what I'm going with.
