Well they are keepers for me, a great combo of price point, comfort, technical and sound quality.  Could I do with an inch or so more bass? Maybe. But they sound pretty neutral/balanced, with that effortless smooth planar presentation. I find the treble well extended but crucially, not fatiguing.

  No... I dislike v-shaped headphones like TH600/900, they are harsh to my ears due to sibilance and excessive treble. I mean a sound signature like Earsonics Velvet. It's perfect. Philips Fidelio X2 is great too. A planar magnetic with Fidelio X2 sound signature would be really good. Not far from neutral with good bass and a big soundstage, basically a high-end club sound system.

How do the Sony MDR-Z7 compare to these? Has anyone got both?
 
Edit: They're the same price in my country. I've heard such great things about the comfort of the Z7, I will be wearing them all day long at the office while programming.

Well I dunno how I'd describe it otherwise, all I know is I get into the music a lot more using the glacier than just my phone.. Can't stop my foot tapping along, etc. 

 Makes edm much more enjoyable imo.
 
I'd say fun sounding but as lukeap69 said, everyone has different ideas of fun so I guess fun sounding to me would be more accurate.

The z7's are more comfy personally, they have really thick pads and they're bigger than the ones on the pm-3. I found the sound to be a little odd (still enjoyable though, just seemed a little out of balance or something) but I've only spent a little bit of time with the z7, maybe 15 minutes or so at various places in japan fwiw...

I started messing with the EQ & found that if I pulled it down by 6db at 500hz & then gradually pushed the treble & bass up to +6db (forming a 'V'), the PM-3s sounded a lot better. Toggling the EQ on & off sounds almost like dunking my head underwater…  
Does what I'm describing sound normal? Is that an acceptable amount of EQ'ing to get something to sound good? I feel strange about having to tweak the sound so hard before getting a favourable result. Is there any chance that they might be defective? Or is this just the sound signature of planar mags? Will burn-in help with the mid section?
 
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Big thanks in advance!

Check out Tyll's frequency response curves and compare HD 25 vs. PM-3. You will immediately see, that the HD 25 shows kind of a "V-curve" with a drop of up to 10 dB in the 400...500 Hz region. Compared to curve of the PM-3 (that shows an almost flat response up to 1'000 Hz), I would say that your ears got used to the "V response" of the HD 25 over time. It's all subjective when it comes to personal tastes. Tyll's and Hans030390 measurements are quite objective measures imho, and these correlate quite good to my "reference HD 800" quality that I am "attuned" to. Hope this helps.
