looks like Mr. Kaneda had some kind of accident so Pricejapan response might get slower now.

I'm considering the DP-X1. What are the quirks and annoyances that have yet to be ironed out if any? Have there been any firmware updates since it's release?
It looks like E-Bay (Japan) is currently the only place to buy. I'm guessing no warranty. :(

Is there a general consensus on the best closed-back headphone value for money to pair with the DP-X1 in balanced mode in an office setting? The cans don't need to be portable and also shouldn't bleed to much sound.

Is there anything besides the Oppo PM3s worth considering (eg Sony MDR-Z7)?

Get well soon Kaneda-san. Nice gentleman and very good experience buying from him.

I don't know how many firmware updates there have been, but I got prompted with an update within a few minutes of first powering up my player (you can check manually if you want).

Issues with it ... the headphone jacks aren't very solidly mounted (just soldered to the board, with no additional support), there is quite audible distortion using third-party players via the internal DAC/amp in quiet passages of music or during fade-in/fade-out (does not happen with the stock player, but it's an issue with TIDAL and Spotify for example).  On my unit  Bluetooth was utterly useless with a range of about a foot (possibly a fault).  And because it's Android based if you want to avoid forced up sampling then you need to use the built-in player app or something like UAPP.

You can buy directly from the Onkyo USA store.  If that link doesn't show you the player, then it's out of stock - but as I post they're in stock.

Is the case held together by screws or look easy to take apart? Maybe the headphone jack can be epoxied or modded for strength somehow.
Has ID3 tag support improved?

I think the only way in to the unit is to pull the screen off/out, like most modern touch-screen devices.  I didn't see any screws etc. though I can't say I was looking.

Can't comment on ID3 tag support changes - I used it on the latest firmware.  And then only long enough to determine that, despite it sounding excellent when playing directly from local storage through it's own DAC/amp with the stock player, the other issues were sufficient to render it a non-workable solution for me.

I didn't encounter any issues with indexing or incorrectly read/categorized files - the indexed library was what I expected it to be.

I don't understand why a business can't get a simple DAP right. This comes close, but I get an uneasy feeling spending $800 on something that's plagued with issues. Very frustrating. I may just get a Plenue D for the time being and wait until somebody makes a DAP that doesn't have problems.

Best value for money without a shadow of a doubt are the Beyerdynamic DT150. They sound wonderful from the Onkyo and have great isolation. The big drawback is that they look like a pair of industrial ear defenders. For ten times the price you can get the T5p from the same manufacturer. I haven't yet heard them from the DP-X1 but I suspect they'll be slightly better than the DT150s sonically and offer poorer isolation. They do look beautiful however. So depending on how much you want to pay, how loud you like to listen, and whether your colleagues already find you a bit crazy, you have a couple of options there

Really sorry to hear about Kaneda's accident. Hopefully he'll be back to strength soon and able to offer the fantastic friendly service I had from him.

Unfortunately it's glued like so many things these days

I have seen a picture of the screen removed and it's not very heavily bonded so I did toy with the idea of getting the heat gun out and doing as you suggest.

In the end my courage failed so instead I flowed some epoxy into the gaps from the outside. The fact that the jacks stand slightly proud allows for a good bond to be achieved and mine are now rock solid.

The jacks are literally the weak point of this device. Unless it's used with exceptional care it's not a matter of if they will fail, but when they will fail. I strongly recommend some form of additional stabilisation.

The moment a vendor goes down the Android route for a DAP things become very suspect for me.  It's native audio path is not something I want to deal with ... and, in my opinion, forced up sampling has no place in a dedicated audio player (I might let it slide if the unit was not aimed at audiophiles ... i.e. budget-level stuff).

It seems that the manufacturer's get the OS/firmware. right and screw up the hardware somehow, get the hardware just right and screw up the OS, or get everything nearly perfect and then miss a single, often critical for some, feature.  The AK players get the OS right, but screw up on storage and have a relatively weak amp stage.  The players that get the storage right (e.g. the Calyx M) do silly things like omit a digital output.  And then there are things like the iBasso DX80, which looks about perfect as a transport - until it won't properly index your files.

I don't see a reason that Onkyo couldn't fix all the issues, headphone jacks excepted of course, in a firmware update.  But the issues aren't new ... and the player is 6 months old ... and those issues remain, so I wasn't willing to hold my breath.

Such a shame ... it's a damn near perfect player conceptually.  It has the necessary hardware to be so, certainly.  And it's let down on software issues and how the jacks are mounted.  Hopefully they at least get the software sorted before I do something silly and pull the trigger on an AK380.

Amen. One other thing. A replaceable battery. Spending this kind of money on a device that I will use for at least 5 years shouldn't die a slow death because I can't change a simple battery!
