Onkyo DP-CMX1 GRANBEAT | Dual Dac | Balanced | Phone DAP

I can vouch for this. I have phone with sd650 and it is as snappy as any 800series. And with better battery life too

I can understand for their choice of 650, but id like to see a more future proof CPU, especially with Android. For now it's OK, but putting down 800 bucks for a phone which will be sluggish as new OS coming out is a bit deal breaker. Onkyo might never release updated OS for this phone, or you never want to update it either, but what if 3 years from now Spotify Tidal won't be running on old Android platform? It happened in the past with couple of popular apps, there is no reason it wouldn't happen again.

I like this phone and might my next one. Let's wait for the hands on.

The DAP is already shaped like a brick so ergonomics is not an issue, so imo they should have increased the battery to 4000mAh, that way they could have used a. 820/821. Unless they use stock Android. That phone as spec'd is going to lag with the dac/amp/phone transition - - with that slower processor. I'd pay $1,200 for a DP1XA with US LTE bands and specs say comparable to a oneplus 3T with say a 9028pro like the ibasso dx200($900 more with no phone). Two SD card slots, or 128GB internal +one SD slot

Also make sure it has aptx HD and find a way to Disable the Qualcomm dac on the processor so that it's guaranteed that all audio goes through ONLY the ESS dac

$740 is quite high for a smartphone.

For that money, you can buy some of the best smartphones out there...

My understanding is that this is not about just a mobile phone. You can now get a decent V10 for half that price or less What you are buying, is a high-end DAP (actually, a slightly updated DAC version of the X1, now $500 at Amazon) PLUS a phone module in the same box for the convenience of occasional calls because the owners' focus is purely music. Thus, there is even a dedicated switch to cut all notification and not to be disturbed! However, if one still requires a good sounding mobile, it has to be addressed at different fora.

See what you can get for $700:

http://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-AR-ZS571KL/

256GB internal storage
24bit DAC
Android 7.0
VR ready smartphone...
Extremely slim
This one's also coming in Feb.  I think this Asus ZenFone AR is much better than LG V10 or V20.

I thought this Onkyo phone will come at $500 price tag.

What DAC/Amp is in the ZenFone AR? Will it deliver even near the quality of audio that the DP-CMX1 will, or that the V10 or V20 do? It's certainly not gonna have balanced out like the Onkyo. The Zenfone seems like an impressive phone, but it's focus is entirely different and it's going for a different market

I have another phone with the 650 and 3 gigs of ram and it's just as fast as my V10 which has an 808 and 4 gigs. The 650 is newer than the 801 despite the model #s and has 6 cores while the 820/821 is a quad core. Of course the 8XXs are faster but no way a modern hexa-core cpu with that much ram will be outdated anytime soon.

Only thing an 820/821 would do here is increase the cost, drain the battery faster, and output more heat all while doing absolutely nothing to improve audio quality.

The Onkyo does have aptx hd:

Bluetooth®機能Version 4.1

Codec: SBC/ apt-X/ apt-X HD (Transmit only)

820 is 2 times better performance than 650 according to AnTuTu benchmark. So it's far more future proof than 650. The heat and battery is only a problem when phone is put in intensive operation like 3D gaming. Contributing to audio quality might be better, as usability is concerned (lagging UI for example)

Agreed. It is more of a DAP and less of a phone.  So if your main use is as a phone, then go for V10/htc, if main use is as a DAP then this is the device to look for.
