This year, THE PHONE is going to fight back on headfi.

Is sure looks interesting. But Onkyo needs to be very careful not to, so to speak, sit between two chairs. The smartphone specs are outdated so they will have to succeed with the dap.

They compete with HTC 11 LG V20/30 and maybe the LG G6. I have never tried the LG V20 but I have read several impressions saying that it's on the same level as Onkyo dp-x1.

I am not convinced that the dp-x11 will be a success.

Yeah, that's a potential issue for me. If it's not good enough as a smartphone to replace my smartphone, then I'll still have to carry 2 devices with me at most times on the go, in which case the smartphone features become redundant and unnecessary. And I don't even need the latest flagship specs, I have a Moto Z Play, which is only a mid-range smartphone, and it does everything I need except quality audio, but I do need at least a 5.5" screen, a big battery and a fingerprint reader on my smartphone. It's not looking like the DP-X11 will tick enough boxes for me

I'm sure there is a market for this, how big that market is remains to be seen.

If the dp-x11 can achieve 90% of the SQ of dp-x1 I think people will go for it.  "It sounds much better than an iPhone" , this reason is good enough.

Looks nice, I wish the screen was 5.5 or 5.7 though, don't think I could go back to a 5-inch screen

I like this as well. 4.7 looks too small now. I think perception normalize after getting used to the size of the screen. I used to feel 3.5 inch is the upper limit of a mobile device in terms of display size. As I move to the bigger size screen, it feels like it become the normal size over time. Then if I see the previous screen size I can't believe how small it looks.

I'm on it again and will say 5.5' is the limit. At least, I can feel my hands can't go bigger or I have to use 2 hands all the time if I go bigger.

As for DP-X11, Onkyo has to nail both Phone and DAP right. Can't afford one or the other to disappoint. Otherwise, what is the point? This is supposed to be the all-in-one mobile device.

This looks like THE perfect audiophile phone. Great to finally see a phone not just with dual dac/amp chips but also nav buttons, a volume wheel, and balanced out.

However, the model number shown in the youtube video someone linked earlier is DP-CMX1.

V20 sounds great but it doesn't come close to the dp-x1. Not even the same league. I'm saying this with headphones on listening to the dp-x1 and typing this on the V20.
I will say though, if you get a dp-x1(a) go balanced.

I second this. I have both V20 and DP-X1A. While i never try DP-X1, i can say that DP-X1A with balanced cable still beat V20. However, V20 can tie with DP-X1A in single ended for some music and i dare say V20 can beat many other current DAPs out there.

Onkyo smartphone really need to work hard so as not to come as half-way compromise (neither here nor there).
