ONIX Alpha XI1 - Smallest & Most Affordable ONIX DAC - High-Power Portable USB DAC/AMP

Volume has too many steps🤣 it's more of a nitpick and a personal preference. Although I do appreciate the thought behind Andy's rating system, he did another video pointing out fhat these are based on his personal preferences and he even continued to say just recently that he will stop the rating system from now on. I like his reviews and it is this rating system that helped me decide which dongle to buy... too bad.

I like the 100 steps on the Alpha. It beats the hell out of iPhone’s what, 7 steps? The Alpha can dial into the exact volume I want, and it has a really smooth and fast +/- function when you hold the key down.

I stand corrected.
I was thinking the iBasso DC07 but it was the HIBYFC06 when I said 92.
But yes the iBasso scored really good. same as the Alpha. Although... IIRC didn't he ding Alpha on the volume control because of too many steps?
IMHO that's not fair because if you set the Alpha to control the source's volume and not the DAC, you have fewer steps.

And of course the Alpha gets a 9 on the Power Efficiency category.
Power effiency here according to Andy pertains to the dongle's ability to drive iems and headphones of higher impedance. It also means that it doesn't draw out too much battery from its host transport. I think what he failed to tske note about is the incompatibility issue mainly because both his phones, a Sony Experria 4 Mk3 and a Xiaomi 9T Ultra. do not have this issue.

Hmmm.
Ok, what is your PC?
My experience is a little different between the macbook pro M1Max vs iPhone15ProMax.

I may pull one of my Linux boxes out of the rack ... the one w the 3090 GPU and load up some Linux software for sound processing on the GPU.
But I'm running decent mother boards and AMD chips.
not worthy to mention here 😂 it's from maybe 5 years ago as far as i can remember.. so that's could be the problems but i'll stand on my opinion.. it's cleaner on phone than pc

Well most phones people have do not work with Onix unless connected to auxiliary power. That has been considered a negative to an otherwise excellent and great sounding dac. You don't happen to have one of those incompatible phones would you?

We need to speak out against your "Most phones".

We have been monitoring the feedback on compatibility on forums and through our dealers and while there is some categories that seem problematic (Samsung A line, some Motorola), we otherwise only see quite rare random reports (like one or two models of Xiaomi/Huawei out of dozens of phones they currently selling).

Majority of currently sold phones show no issues with ONIX XI1.

ONIX XI1 doesn't play well on PC right now, especially in terms of DSD playback
Not smooth (To play DSD, you have to install Driver, but when you install Driver, some other genres can't be played).

I had no sound at all on DSD. Tried everything and nothing worked (PC).
Then I downloaded 1.1.3 update and reinstalled Windows drivers (followed all directions from setup, including reboot). That worked for me. DSD in Foobar is outstanding with Onix Xl1. Didn't update firmware, I stay with 1.0.3.

ONIX XI1 hiện không chơi tốt trên PC, đặc biệt là về khả năng chơi DSD
Không mượt (Để chơi được DSD, bạn phải cài Driver, nhưng khi cài Driver thì một số thể loại khác lại không chơi được).

Ok then do us a favor Shanling. Why don't you release an official list of phones you currently support to back up your claim?

That will make your buyers' decision to buy or not to buy so much easier!

Please, check sample rate/audio signal type on the screens device, that indicates DSD or DoP (PCM with proper sample rates to correspond DSD64/128/...) . I can't make foobar2k (ASIO, SACD, DSD Processor) to play native DSD or DoP (DSD over PCM) thru my device on Windows OS (lateast drv installed). I have no problem to do that on linux/android platform. Anyone?

EDIT: ok, my bad... I've not checked DSD+PCM in SACD output :/

Wasn’t there a spreadsheet crowdsourced earlier in this thread?

I am not trying to offend, but aren’t you possibly being a bit hypocritical here? Seems you are saying that most phones don’t work with the Xl1 without supplying evidence, but demanding proof of Shanling’s claims that most phones do…

To be clear, since I don’t have any problem with my Xl1 and Samsung S22 Ultra, I am biased to believe the product is without major fault… such is the human condition and our perceptions based on our experiences.

Reminds me of an old economics joke…. My friend loses their job, it is a recession. I lose my job, it is a depression. If I read that some users have a problem with a product, I might believe it is flawed. If I have a problem with it, then it is hot garbage…
