Well indeed it all comes down to the price of the equipment your using, wont matter if you have low end headset and a good soundcard or for no apparent reason high end headset and onboard soundcard...You can't answer if he needs or doesn't need a dedicated card without knowing what type of headset and or speakers he uses...Suggesting that a guy with 5$ headset gets a dedicated card for 30+$ is ridiculous...

Not really. Dolby Headphone and CMSS-3D work on any headset.

One of those circular arguments.
Why should I get a better source as I have cheap headphones?
Why should I get better headphones as I have a cheap source?

Round and round it goes...Don't know how many times I have heard that foolish argument.

Just buy a better card or DAC and start building a good audio system.

The answer is simple: get whatever gives more improvement for the same money. If the onboard audio is competently implemented and used (quite often neither is the case, though), it is very likely that upgrading the $5 headphones will make a far greater difference.

Well things like G.Sniper are great ideas. However as said, that adds noise to the sound and honestly it doesn't cost much to get a X-fi. So maybe sound cards would still be a better choice right now.
