Ok so I'll be on a plane, long ride to Asia.

No amps, no fancy cords nothing. Just an iPhone.
(I do have the adapter to connect)

Is it a waste to bring my HD-650's?

My other choices are my DT-770 and HD-280 (but these hurt my head.)

I plan on using my Grados on a trip to peru next week. I don't like IEMs. My wife will be using ATH-A700s.

Does anyone know if the high-end noise cancellation options from Sony and Sennheiser are any good?

ATH-ANC7 does here a good job for me. With these headphones it was the first time I could hear music during a flight. With all other headhones I gave up within minutes. The "active noise cancelling" makes some background noise, but it's still much better than without. Maybe a good sealed closed headphone would also be ok, but sure not your HD650.

I take my Shure e3c on every airplane trip. Closed cans offer some isolation, but nothing like an IEM. I'm headed to Europe in March - am thinking about an IEM upgrade for the flights. Not sure which ones yet, but the Klipsch models are appealing.

You can always "borrow" some IEMs from a local store. A while ago, I wanted IEMs for a trip that was in a few days. I bought a pair of Shure SE210s for $150 at BB. I knew that was way too high for those, but I didn't care. After I got back, I returned them without a problem and spent the money on the far-superior q-jays.

Denon 1001. I fly 120000 miles a year with mine. Cord is perfect length, simple to take on and off, lightweight 9\10 comfort, very impressive unamped dynamics with all music genres.

I can't wear IEM's and recently flew with my iPhone and Senn HD280's. There is still a good deal of background noise from the plane that gets through, but they still sounded good and no one around me complained like they might if I had open cans cranked up.
