On a mission to like jazz

More Count Basie blowing my mind right now, especially my first listen of Honi Coles from The Golden Years.

It was a downpour last night as a storm closed in on Seattle but the show went on and it was fantastic.
Excited to say I will be attending Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Orchestra in a month here in Seattle!

So I'm watching For Love Of Country The Arturo Sandoval Story, acting is Andy Garcia but the story is what I'm after. Now Pacquito and Arturo are here who I'm familiar with but so is Dizzy Gillespie.

So now I ask you guys, which albums are good to discover Gillespie with?

Dizzy is one of my favorites. So much humor and love of life in his playing and of course that prodigious talent. Hard bop really isn't my thing, but he transcended it for me because he wasn't as clinical as some of the others. Plus somehow the logic of his solos jibes with me - he had a flair for the dramatic.

It depends if you want more hard bop or his afro cuban stuff. Here's a few recommendations.

Cover of the Jobim classic, perhaps my favorite Dizzy and favorite Dizzy album.

Of course Manteca from the classic live at Newport album.

And one more

Enjoy the show. You ever go to The Village Vanguard in NYC?

But of course, the Jazz Mecca! Think the last group I saw there was The Bad Plus, could be wrong about that, though...

I haven't been at the Vanguard in a long time. I hope they still have the Jam Sessions. I seem to remember having some great players drop in, awesome.

Don't think there are as many jam sessions as there were (I could be wrong on this, though, maybe I'm just not up on them. There are some Village clubs like Smalls, think they do have it, and there are so many new places in Brooklyn, that weren't there when I was in Brooklyn, sigh...), Smoke actually does have one after the last set if I remember correctly, but I have to be in the office 8:30 tomorrow, too old for that kind of night life at this point. :o
