As a reminder, according to @tranqfx (https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/drop-sennheiser-hd-8xx.25588/reviews), if you remove 2 of the tuning stickers you get the best of both worlds tuning/timber wise between the 8XX & 800S.

• 2K reduction is much less pronounced (Better vocals, much closer to 800S)
• Bass improvement from 8XX still retained.

I haven't tried this mod yet, because mine arrived DOA, & I'm waiting for a replacement.

But I think that this is the crazy value that we wanted from Drop to begin with. And if we can get close to the 800S tonally/timbre-wise for the enthusiast (with the mod) while making them more appealing to the general public bass/body/price wise (stock), it is a huge win for the community.

Oh wow...I was about to return my 8XX but decided to hang onto it for a while outside the return window. Now it really hurts seeing the discounted $699 price >.<

That's good to hear. I ordered Feb 10 and received them Feb 12. I emailed support yesterday but no response as of yet. How long is response turnaround usually?

I don't have a measurement rig. @tranqfx had an 800S that he A/B'd against as his reference. But from the research I've done I think a pad roll will help with the 6k~ peak. I believe the Dekoni Hybrid and the Perforated pads will tame some of the energy in that region. But again I can't say personally since I'm still waiting for my replacement 8XX from Drop. I plan on getting the Perforated Pads once my wallet stops weeping!

Drop sold 140 units of the 8XX yesterday and there are 598 units available. They may stop the coupon code any time soon. Once the coupon code is stopped, there is no way for the price match or price adjustment.

The only way I could get treble to acceptable was use particular type of tube amp. I just find the sound really dull (in boring, not dark) and treble happy with most solid-states. I also tried EQ, but all technicalities was gone when EQ'd to a target. I think EQ is useful for minor things, but you can't transform a headphone with EQ.

I'm old now too, so I probably better tolerate the treble. lol But, when I was young. Oh boy, that treble on the 800!

Yeah, that's actually why I took the time to make that post. Wanted to give people an option to experience the 800s for a lot less

As a followup, I've been listening to the 8xx(modded) for 2 months now and when I go back and listen to the 800s, I still slightly prefer my modded 8xx and stand by my original post.

Placed my order today for these. Currently have the Drop Sennheiser HD6XX using a Soundblaster X7. I would like to get a shorter cable for the 8XX as I will use these at my pc desk and do not want to deal with such a long cable. Any recommendations?
