Oooo, I have just received my Goldring GX200. Lovely pronounced bass (if sometimes slightly over-pronounced) and pretty good everything else plus a slight dark side to it which I love; it makes these phones fun.

Now, I'm no fool and these are in no way shape or form better than the SE530's but they have a nicer fit (but less isolation) and much easier to fit in (so I can actually share the music without getting other peoples gunk in them), and are more suited in a school environment.

Consequently, my brand new paid of SE530's are now listed on eBay

I'm a happy bunny.

Note: I know very little about headphones but I prefer these to the ER-6i.

hey, i goz these last monday and i love the GX200s too, especially the midrange, it's "addicting" as jant71 said in his "review" of them...

i had actually gotten the shure foams for them, but i thought the silicon tips fit better and were more comfortable...

Hey guys, regarding about the cloth on the grill removal "tweak".

Initially I removed mine as well after reading what other people had to say about it. At that time, yes, it did make the headphones sound more wider and airy...

After a few months of use I started to feel that the docs had a very distorted soundstage.... Like it was as if the sound stage was too wide and the center sound was too close and personal... quite often it sounded like the vocals were coming from the back of my skull... This caused some headaches for me...

I decided to reattach the cloths, but this time I used a different kind of tape that I know will hold better and I made sure they were smaller strips than what was originally applied.

After screwing the thing back together I gave it a listen. To be honest I was really suprised. It sounded like I had restored the sound in my docs. First of all, the stereo separation didn't feel as extreme as it did. It sounded like it was meant to be like this. And the center sound (usually vocals) sounded more forward, in front of me, than being inside my head.

I'm suspecting that the docs, after completely burning them in, sound better with the cloth attach to the grill.

By the way, I have no opinion about the woody mods but I'm guessing it's different when you're using wood compared to the stock grill. If you're not going to woody your docs I think it's probably a better idea to leave the cloths inside.

I'd like other people who have removed the cloth way too early (like me) to try and put them back in and post what you think. It would be interesting to know if this is merely a placebo or perhaps the best "tweak" for the docs you've read since you read the one about removing the cloths... lol

Wow. It's uncanny you posted this. I got my Dr 150's about a month ago and have been burning them in and listening to see if I think the sibilence I first heard would go away. Pretty sure it has, at least for the most part. I decided to wait until after that to remove the cloth, and just did so the other day. I can't say that I am really impressed with the change. Obvioulsly, it's not possible to do a quick A/B comparison, so I have decided to listen without the cloth for a few days, then put it back. Like you, I was planning to attach them with much less tape. When I removed the cloth, I could not help but notice how much cellophane tape extended over the cloth. This undoubtedly interferes with the air/sound movement behind the driver. When I put them back, I will attempt to secure them so that the air passage is only going throuh cloth material, with minimal effect from the tape.

Now, listening w/o cloth, I have tried moving my hands over the outside of the grille to cover them to varying degrees. I also noticed that the separation/ soundstage changes, and in particular vocals become more front and center with some 'blocking' from my hands.

I thought about a few things while listening after removing the cloth. The first was how the enclosure of the driver, including the ear pads and whatever is behind any headphone driver must affect the SQ of the phone, so I really wonder how much the driver contributes vs the housing in any phone. (Think about all the 'pad mods' people do wth Grados.) Second, I wonder how much 'engineering' goes into crafting the SQ on this or any headphone when a simple thing such as a piece of cloth affects the sound. For all I know, some engineer designed the Dr 150 to sound best with fat pieces of cellophane tape sticking out into the space behind the driver and I just screwed it all up!! Or, maybe (as others suspect), the cloth was put in merely for cosmetic purposes to hide the back of the driver, and no one at the lab/manufacturing plant gave a second thought as to how it got held in place.

Thanks for your post and input. I will post again with my impressions after I replace the cloth.

Somehow I can't shake the feeling that the cloth is not just meant for aesthetic purposes. It definately keeps dust out, makes it a little more difficult for hair from getting in through the grill. Maybe even keeps the moisture out.

But most of all, it definately affects the sound. I personally find it very hard to believe that Goldring would put something inside their headphone which greatly affects the sound and not be aware of it. Especially if it apparently "degrades the sound and serves no purpose".

It would cost them less to make these headphones without the cloth and they'd probably not include it unless it was important enough. These headphones are meant to be budget, so anything that is considered redundant is usually dropped.

More than likely, the cloth is probably meant to be there as they do play a significant role in the stereo/spatial department.

Edit: Hey I wonder if substituting the cloth with different materials could be an improvement from using the stock cloth. Like a thin layer of foam or something. I have no idea if it's even a good idea but an idea is an idea.

I decided to put the cloth back in last night. I'm no expert, and have not had a lot of listening experience with good headphones, but I think I like the sound better with the cloth in. While doing it, I also thought about how the sound would be with something thicker in there. My guess is it would bloat the bass and narrow the imaging. I doubt I will try it, but please post back if you do.

Again, if I could do a A/B comparison that would be more telling, but to my ears, I like the way my DR 150's sound with the cloth in. Rush's Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta and Bob Marley's Stir it Up sounded VERY GOOD. That's good enough for me!

I agree that Goldring intended for these cans to sound as they do, and it would be strange if the cloth were not part of that intent. I wonder how different the the DR 100's and DR 50's are with respect to housing? Wouldn't it be funny if they were just missing cloth?!

Awesome! Yeah the thing that most people complain about with these cans is that the soundstage is too "flat" or 2-dimensional. Now I'm wondering if it's because those people also removed the cloth....

I notice that the soundstage sounds more natural with the cloth on compared to having it removed.

Tom Sawyer is a good track.

And Bob Marley is truly amazing. I recently picked up Catch A Fire Deluxe and oh man it sounds reaaaaally good. in a mellow sorta sense.

Hello there.

Earlier this week I decided to finally get more serious about sound and buy a headphone that would make my music sound abit better than what I have been used to hear for the last few years ( I usually bought headphones that cost around 20$ or so. Shame on me)

I went to my local Hi-fi specialist shop and tested a few different headphones and asked alot of questions. And then I started to read abit on the net aswell before I decided on what route to take. I found out about Goldring on thursday and found this forum yesterday. I read a few pages in this thread and decided to just go and buy the Docs at once.

Today I read through the rest of this thread while listening to music on my docs... I am seriously pissed off at myself for not going for good headphones earlier but I am really happy with my purchase yesterday. The DR150 is all I hoped for and more.

So now I will go out and start to convert the rest of my friends to this revelation
