I know, I know. I'm asking about SPEAKERS. But seriously, I really only trust the guys in these forums.

Anyway, I am building a new rig, and have an XFI Xtreme music sound card. I am getting a pair of darth beyer v3's and a MAD Ear+ HD2 amp for the primary listening.

Although, sometimes I won't want to wear headphones, or just play a movie while watching it with friends, etc.

So, what is your opinion on a good set of desktop speakers. Price doesn't matter, sound quality does.

2/2.1/5.1 will all be considered.

What are your thoughts?

Twoish years ago the Klipsch Promedia were by far the best 2.1 system out there made for computers. I have not really kept up, but from a recent Head-fi thread it appears they still hold the crown. How it compares to bookshelf speekers I cannot tell you.

Here is a link to what they look like. Be warned, these were replaced in Klipsch's lineup by a far inferior 2.1 system. I cannot recall the name offhand, but it has a silver-greyish color pattern and an "orb" for the controller/base.

Well, do you want surround or is 2.0/2.1 enough? If surround, just get Logitech Z5500 I guess... you can also try Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1, but they are out of production, so you may have difficulty finding them.

If you can live with stereo, just get a nice pair of bookshelves+amp or a <$1000 pair of monitors. Add a sub later if you feel you need one. Ultimately, if you are willing to spend that much, it's best to spend a couple of days auditioning stuff and making a choice yourself. So visit your local hi-end audio and/or proaudio shops.

EDIT:
for starters, here is a list of brands/models for you to research (google is your friend):

Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 and CMT-340
AV123 X-LS and matching sub
Axiom Audio

All of these are internet direct brands, you can order them for a 30-day trial with money-back guarantee.

Powered monitors:

2.1 should be enough for now

i also say 2.1 unless you are in dire need of 5.1 for whatever reasons.

i went the budget way and got cheap the insignia bookshelf speakers + a used receiver from craigslist for around $100. beats the crepe out of my older logitech 5.1 speakers.

i haven't heard anything superior to the M200 yet, but i do recommend them as they're relatively cheap and sound amazing. and since your budget is <$1,000 then you can add a nice sub to it and make it a great 2.1 system

If you are looking for ease and want the best surround sound PC set up go with Creative Gigaworks 7.1 (comes with all you need including a sub)

It has been the King for a number of years now, I don't think anything has knocked it off the top spot. With over 700 watts and the ease of having Satellite Speakers instead of bookshelf monitors.

Then you should also mod your existing X-Fi Extreme Music soundcard

What a set up

Enjoy

I have read a ton of reviews, and decided on the M200.

However, what is the difference between those and the MKII's?

I WILL hotrod my xfi.
