Swans - Children of God

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swans_%28band%29

"Children Of God (1987) further expanded Jarboe's role, acting as a foil to Michael Gira's tales of suffering, torture, and humiliation. The stories portrayed here, however, are ever the more unusual, given their juxtaposition - and admixture - with religious imagery. The intention was neither to mock nor embrace religion, but experiment with the power inherent in its messages and the hypocrisy of many of its leaders.[4]"

Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopor_Aeternus

"She has said in several interviews that she spent nearly three decades in extreme states of depression, despair and loneliness, all of which resulted in her discovery of the "Ensemble Of Shadows": otherworldly presences and/or voices who stirred her musical senses and guided her to share the works in her head with the public."

"Her mediaeval-influenced music is emotional and melancholic, using a variety of brass, woodwinds (in particular, flutes), string quartets and various guitars. In some instances, synthesizers and drum machines or real percussion are used. Anna-Varney has clearly stated that she creates her music about herself, solely for herself. Various themes include death, suicide, unrequited love, karmatic pain, loneliness and sadness."

Lustmord - Heresy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lustmord

"Heresy" - a relentlessly dark work that has been described as sounding like a journey through Hell."

How about some really old Industrial - or rather something new sounding "almost like that" (this is a song by TG)?
I love the Throbbing Gristle sound!

I have Morphine and don't find them all that dark. Moody perhaps but not really dark.

anything by whitehouse, their cruise album has very dark and disturbing connotations, and i would hazard a guess 99% of people here havent heard of them or heard them, so its certainly obscure

I can't believe Elend hasn't been mentioned more in this thread. I think it sounds just like what you are searching for. Modern contemporary classical mixed with dark ambient and industrial. No cheese, no funny costumes or gimmicks. Just really, really dark and haunting compositions. Any album from the Winds-saga (Winds Devouring Men, Sunwar the Dead, A World in Their Screams) should fit the bill. Really, Elend has some of the darkest music ever written. Sample from http://www.elend-music.org, though their best tracks are not represented in the samples imo.

Another group composing really dark and haunting music is Tenhi. Basically Tenhi is a finnish neo-folk trio, but in reality they are much more than that. They sound nothing like casual neo-folk (ie. Death in June). More like anytihng beetween contemporary classical and progressive folkrock. Still, their music is mostly dark and at times, REALLY dark. Their new 3cd rarities/unreleased tracks complination is really good. For more classical/acoustic sound, try their debut "Kauan", and for modern sound, Maaäet. Both albums are really dark and melancholic. Try samples from www.tenhi.com. My favourite track from Tenhi is Soutu, which makes Moonlight Sonata sound like Blue Danube.

Mournful deathly slow piano music with great lyrics (if you can understand Finnish).
My friend said it sounded like "Keane on morphine". Don't know if that's a recommendation but there you go!

EDIT: Are Tenhi and Harmaa the same band? I'm confused.

They share members AFAIK. They both record at UTUstudio as well. I'm not sure how similar their lineups are, but I think Tenhi is way better/skilled.
