NuForce Releases HAP-100, an Aggressively Priced Single-ended Class-A High-End Headphone Amplifier Targeted for the Headphone Audio Enthusiast

The NuForce HAP-100's innovative engineering combines features never before available at this price point. Most significantly, the HAP-100 provides headphone listeners with single-ended Class-A performance - considered by many to be the ultimate in high-fidelity design.

Milpitas, CA (PRWEB) September 04, 2012

NuForce, Inc., a leader in professional and consumer audio gear, introduces today a world-class combination preamp and headphone amplifier targeted for the audio enthusiast that makes quality headphone listening a high priority. The innovative design packs together a host of features never before available at its price point. For unprecedented performance, we've implemented the same technologies employed in our flagship P-20 preamp, in union with other precision, audiophile-grade characteristics. The cornerstone of any great audio system is the preamp. It should offer true musicality along with the lowest possible levels of noise and distortion, and provide enough inputs to accommodate good system flexibility - not to mention elegant style and ease of use. Furthermore, quality headphone listening is a much greater requirement in our noisy world for many of today's audio enthusiasts. In light of these issues, we designed the HAP-100 to meet all these needs and more.

The HAP-100 incorporates the same volume control technology we first developed for our flagship P-20 preamp. At the unit's core is a switched-resistor ladder network of low-noise, thin-film resistors, one per volume setting, permitting discrete, high-resolution increments of 1dB for each of the HAP-100's one hundred volume steps. In welcome addition to the volume control's fine-adjustment precision, the signal's passage through a single, high-quality resistor at all settings ensures minimal sound degradation.

Following this, a pristine, zero-negative-feedback preamplifier stage delivers vanishingly low levels of distortion, crystalline accuracy and genuine musicality. A true minimalist design, the preamp incorporates an extremely low-noise FET input stage and single high-quality capacitor in the entire signal path.

The HAP-100 is built on a platform that provides the unit's audio circuits with the purest of DC power. With its toroidal transformer for minimizing magnetic-field interference and capacitor bank's massive energy reserve, the HAP-100's linear power supply delivers explosive dynamics and lightning-fast transients. The HAP-100's specs are nothing short of stellar: THD+N of less than 0.001% and a dynamic range in excess of 110 dB for the subtlest of musical details against the blackest of backgrounds - without a hint of coloration. Its performance, features, style and price are bound to delight.

Jason Lim, CEO of Nuforce: “We have every confidence that the most demanding listener will find the HAP-100 to be the ideal centerpiece for headphone and conventional stereo listening. For transparency, speed, accuracy, resolution and musicality, along with high style and convenience, the HAP-100 has no equal at its price.”

 1. Digitally controlled, 100-step, precision volume control employing low-noise, thin-film switched-resistor ladder network for absolute precision.
 2. Pristine, ""zero negative feedback"" preamplifier stage for absolute clarity.
 3. Single-ended Class ""A"" headphone amplifier stage with power to drive any headphones.
 4. THD+N = 0.002%
 5. Signal-to-noise ratio in excess of 100dB (1kHz, A-weighted)

Pricing and Availability
The NuForce HAP-100 is available worldwide for a suggested retail price of US $595.00 and will be shipping September 4th, 2012.

I was intending to make room for this one when I planned to sell of the rest of my gear. My iQube and Ultra Micro Stack is still there but could not resist placing an order for these. NuForce have never let me down with their gear. Hope this is worth the investment.

I had an HDP a few years back and was shocked at how good it was, especially for the money.

With the experience they have in headphone amps, design and manufacturing I am thinking they would be very able to create a great unit at a reasonable price.

Headphone amps don't need to cost $1500.  In fact maybe that's kinda crazy.

$595 sounds pretty good to me.

I'm tempted to order one sight unheard.

I´m missing some output measurements, but at a first glance the HAP-100 does not look like a ortho powerhouse

Those output specs seem kinda odd... like it has high output impedance or something since output voltage decreases as load impedance drops. Still, that's a respectable amount of voltage swing for higher impedance headphones.

First Impressions

Got the amp today afternoon. Trying with HD-800 and comparing with my reference, another class A, Lehmann Linear. It is comparable but not quite in the Lehmann League. Seems to me that Lehmann has a lot more room, bass, treble and most definitely surplus power to drive HD-800 with authority.

I had to turn the volume to 84-88 region for Bolevard of Broken Dreams by Diana Krall for the Nuforce to drive HD-800. The highs in the song seems to be a bit tamed in the Nuforce and also the soundstage is a bit smaller.

I tried them with Jazz, Classical and Indian Fusion and so far they are holding their own weight. I am leaning towards the Lehmann at the moment but the NuForce is doing a pretty good job too. I'd definitely not return them as they do everything almost as well as the Lehmann at half the cost.

I may be partial to Nuforce, ever since I heard their Stereo amp 6 years ago, I have admired their neutral sound. I got their iCon Mobile, HDP and not HAP. I love their sound and would have been really happy with them had I not owned Lehmann. Then again, with the highs tamed, HD-800 sounds more musical to me and I can finally listen to them a lot longer.

Thanks for the impressions.  How does the HAP-100 compare to the Icon HDP?

I do not have the HDP with me to compare but from memory, the HAP is a better headphone amp. That may be because the HAP does only one thing that is amplification where as HDP has a DAC as well. Also I am not sure if HDP is class A. With respect to size and weight, HAP is a lot bigger and heavier than HDP. I used to carry HDP on flights for business trips, HAP will add a lot of weight for sure compared to HDP.

I definitely love class A sound as that is all I listen to these days (Just Audio aha 120, Lehmann Linear and now NuForce HAP). I have pretty much sold/selling most of my non Class A gear (if only I find buyers for iQube v1 and HeadRoom Utra Micro Stack).

Thanks for the comments.   This is right out of the box, yes?   I'll be curious to hear if it 'opens up' after a few days of use.

I just ordered one.   Should be here early next week.

Do post your impressions. I am enjoying the NuForce Amp much but I keep going back to Lehmann. I have also send out an email to NuForce letting them know about the gain. But for half the price of Lehmann, they are pretty good.

In my zeal to have the latest NuForce toy, I ordered.  Then after more research, I discovered that it did not have an "optical" input.

I got rid of the hard-link between my PC beast and amp when I bought my HDP.  There's too much noisy crap going on inside a PC to go back now.  I'll have to look at the NuForce DAC-100.

A separate DAC and headphone amp is a nice way to go.
