New TOL A&K DAP : the AK Ultima SP1000
Feb 5, 2020 at 2:22 PM Post #7,771 of 9,406
Here's "our" page https://www.head-fi.org/threads/new-tol-a-k-dap-the-ak-ultima-sp1000.850061/page-300

And Progisus halfway down the page includes a link for samples.

I used the MQA Original sample.

Oh, and the Stones I "downloaded." The Nightfly CD is coming via Amazon.
Sorry, ever since the update to the forums, I'm not getting any notifications for new posts.

@olddude which tracks did you download from that sample link? I know some of them max out at 24/96, it is possible one of the ones you downloaded are only 24/96 max.

Olddude where are you purchasing MQA music from, I would like to check this out and report back. I own hundreds of Hires files I have purchased from the obvious places. But MQA folded tracks, where? thanks in advance.
2L, Onkyo Music, hiresaudio.com and nugs.net all are MQA download partners - https://www.mqa.co.uk/how-to-get-mqa

7Digital in the US and UK also have some MQA tracks. They are not listed as a partner on the MQA website, but 7Digital is the platform Onkyo Music runs on and they have their own hi-res audio store.

Of course, due to record label contracts, music purchases may not be available from all countries.

Jason- Thanks. When I got home from work just now, I downloaded a couple of other files from the link I got here (not yours). I DL'd both the original MQA and the 16/44 CD MQA versions. All opened up to 300+, one with a green light, one with a blue light. So clearly the earlier file I tried from there was in 96. The other file I have is a DL'd Let It Bleed Stones 50th MQA and that one only opens to 96. It's also available in 196 from hi-res shops in FLAC (non-MQA) and I have that one as well, so not sure why the MQA version stops at 96. My Donald Fagen Nightfly MQA has gone from Louisville to Pittsburg and is now in the netherland between there and me. I'll rip it when it arrives and hopefully we are talking big files! :)

Thanks again. :)

I’ve actually had a consistently weird experience with that

I got the SP1000M, and at first it was really slow. Took about a month of consistent use for its UI to become actually quick and pleasant to use. Same with my AK SR15

Recently got my SP1000M and found it as slow as my SR15… which is a quad-core… go figure.

Went here to do some further research and stumbled on your input and I didn't have this experience as of yet.

However, putting my music on a micro-SD card rather than on the device's memory for that purpose seem to have rendered the UI snappier… Confirmation bias?

Anyway… @JasonNYC Any chance A&K's developers might re-code everything and/or some parts in order to make the UI snappier by disabling some effects, etc.?

At this price point I find it to be borderline acceptable.

You are the 1st person I've ever seen post about NOT liking AK's UI. My internal and my microSD are both at about 80% full and I've never seen any lag. I've had three AK's (120ll, 240SS and now SP1000SS) and never seen any lag.

I actually LOVE AK's UI.

I'm just saying that I find it too slow — especially at this price point.

Accordingly, I just wondered the aforementioned about the UI's future.

Indeed!

I tried and looked at quite a few players before choosing the SP1000. In my opinion their android integration/shell is second to none. Very elegant, snappy and efficient.

you can’t please everyone apparently!

thankfully there are plenty of options out there.

Oh don't get me wrong… I'm not moving anywhere away from this little wonder the SP1000M is — and I am pleased.

As I wrote on the SA700 thread, I second the fact that AK's android integration/shell is second to none.

Buuut — I won't budge, for the price, it should be (even more) faster/snappier

Do a reset and see if that helps. Do a music scan as well. Either something is slowing yours down (system issue or file issue or microCard issue) or you have (sorry) an unrealistic belief in how fast the device should be. I've had a bunch of other brand DAPs and AK's are by far the smoothest and quickest I've used.

Tried it — no change, thanks though.

Smoothest Android-based DAP I had as well.

Sony's ZX300 is way ahead of the SPKM in terms of UI speed though :frowning2:

Since I came from the ZX300, that might explain it.

I’d say let it burn day and night while you aren’t using it - with all the AKs that I tried it was something that worked itself out with playtime

@olddude @mvvRAZ @JasonNYC

Right... mystery solved :relaxed:

For the context: I jump in-between Spotify & the AK Music "app".
(If I can call it that but AK owners will understand me.)

Soooooo... Spotify was the laggy little one and the AK Music "app" is, in fact, snappier.

Now, why was Spotify the laggy little one? Because it turns out that using the arm version of the app, instead of the arm64, on an arm64 architecture works but is sluggish.

After installing the proper arm64 Spotify app, it benefits from the 8-cores and, oh miracle, it's now smoooooth...

So it seems that the overall sluggishness came from my tired little mind going from Spotify to the AK music app resulting in the former's experience "bleeding" onto the latter one... especially as I have recently been using Spotify a bit more.

Hope that makes sense...

Glad you resolved it. I

I "assumed" you were playing music files as you posted that you were using your microcard, not the internal memory (at least I think that's what I recall).
