New TOL A&K DAP : the AK Ultima SP1000

This is a decent video from the Germany high end show, they look very similar the SP1000 and SP2000, Only when the unit is flipped to its back you can tell an immediate difference.

2000 has an excellent design.
More fully metal face (prevention noise from outside) and more solid (not have crazy "lose" backplate). Black top face look amazing too.

So I am sure that I will be keeping my sp1000 and getting the amp. I wish the sp2000 had a tray for the card like the sp1000 I think it makes it look more streamlined. Also it appears that they might not have add-ons for the sp2000 as it doesn't have the pins on the bottom of the unit. The amp will be more than enough power for couch listening with all of my cans I wonder if it will drive the abyss 1266 out of balanced or maybe the susvara (I highly doubt this but one can wish).

All in all this is better for me as I have a Metrum Onyx on the way to test with my desktop setup and 2 channel system. If I like that I might send it back and go for the Pavane if not i might try the Denafrips Terminator.

Just go get the Termi.

Even my dog got jealous watching me like a hawk listening to music. Isn't she a cutie?

Thanks Jason. I think we all get used to the sonic differences between the different DAP chassis, and copper v silver cables etc, so I can see why folks were asking. But the accent thing is pretty normal for presentation purposes. If AK didn’t offer the different accent colours, you can be sure that it would be requested!

My turn to ask a silly question: would one expect any ‘improvement’ (objective phrase I know - for me it’s probably even wider soundstage and even more note / instrument separation) by adding the amp to the SP1000, or is it simply a way to drive more demanding ear/headphones? I’m assuming the latter based on physics, but just wondered.
No difference in sound signature, simply more power output. Some people may perceive a sound difference with more power hungry headphones as the extra power to drive those headphones may make a difference.

That's what I expected as well and appreciate to read :) ... I will lean back for a while and continue to enjoy my SPK. I am sure we will read first impressions and/or reviews any time soon.

The one thing that adds more value IMHO is indeed Roon compatibility. Something I am desperately anticipating. It will completely change HOW I can enjoy my music with the fantastic SQ of my setup. Almost like back in the days when booklets were read often enough to burn every detail into my brain's memory :)

Here is another very good walk through the new SP2000 device , again not too much of a departure from the SP1000 in terms of the design language.
One thing I hope is that the back and the top of the SP2000 are not gloss plastic finishes. hope it’s some none scratch better materials than just a plastic one.
I see a new added feature, car mode has been added. I also see the stainless back panel as a finger print magnet, it’s an attractive unit as they abandoned the carbon fiber back this go around and could be the way forward for AK.

This question came up a few times today at the show. They removed it because they received a lot of complaints that it was too difficult to easily change microSD cards.

I just put in a 400gb card and call it a day. I can't imagine with 512gb internal and up to 512gb card you wouldn't need much more space.

At RMAF last year Andrew could not open the tray for me to install my own SD micro card for a demo. He had to leave the booth to find me a paper clip. The tray does have a polished look to it, but it's embarrassing if you need to change a card and don't have the tool.

Will live in Japan one year since this Sunday.
Bring my HD800S and spk+kse1500 combo to go.
Hope a chance to test spk+the amp how it will sound on 800s.
@JasonNYC is there any A&K exhibition new products in Japan and where it will take place?
I'm sure we will have an event in Japan with all of the new stuff in the next few weeks. Our Japan dealers are great about doing stuff with new product launches. I will let you know when I hear.

We've been demoing the HD800s with the SP2000 in balanced. I was pretty impressed with how great it can drive them. With the noisy environment of the show floor, didn't need to get more that 105 - 110 max on volume and 110 was almost a bit too loud for me. Still had plenty to turn the volume up.

Yep, sounds like us at every single show. Someone always misplaces the tool or takes it with them in their pocket when they leave the booth.

Exactly my thought. Even with 128gig and my 400GB card, that is a vast amount of storage. I tend to put modern stuff on the internal, and classical on the card, but even when I filled the card up, Its just too overwhelming. I find for me its better to put a few select items that I am interested in listening to. Plus 1TB cards are on the way...
