New TOL A&K DAP : the AK Ultima SP1000

I had an opportunity to compare my SP1000Cu against my friend's SP1000SS. I copied the same files to the internal storage of both units for comparison. There was a little but audible difference between the two. But there is one condition required. The recording should be very good with low noise. Old recordings tend to have some tape hiss that may obscure the subtle differences. Also it is better to use acoustic jazz/classical trio or quartet for comparison. Female vocal is also great if accompanied by small group of acoustic instruments. To my ears, Cu has a bit more air with a splash of warmth. Since my favorite genre is female jazz vocal, Cu is perfect fit for me.

Cu has a bit more warmth, SS has the wider sound stage. The differences are subtle, though.

What is really strange with all A&K DAPs that I own, owned or tried (AK380, AK380Cu, SP1000SS, SP1000Cu), is that their digital out shows exacly the same characteristics as the players themselves. You can even hear the sound difference between SP1000SS and SP1000Cu using USB out going into Chord DAVE. Really surprising, I cannot explain why this is the case. I made the same experience when comparing AK380's, AK380Cu's and SP1000SS's optical out into Chord Hugo.

That's an interesting observation. Theoretically the digital out should be independent from player characteristics (mostly analogue part). But I believe your observation.

Very interesting indeed, the composition of the dap that affects the sq must have effect on the very pathway from the source to the dac, in this case, to the line out, and not just from dac to headphone/line out.

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone had any similar issues with their SP1000 or other A&K devices. My battery seems to drain even when the device is shut down. For example: I could shut down my SP1000SS with say...35%-75% battery. The morning after, i'll try powering it on and the battery is completely drained.

I've never had this problem. When I completely shut down the system, a couple of days later the battery level is almost the same (maybe a couple of % drop). Is there anything connected to your SP1000SS after shutting it down?

Actually...I need some help. I know how to make an m3u playlist in VLC, but I can't drag audio folders from my SP1000 in commander one to put the compile the songs into VLC for the playlist. Can I make the playlist on VLC with audio files from my HD, and then the SP1000SS will "Find them" on its own once I load the playlist?

On a sidenote, has the whole A&K firmware development team been fired? Not a single update since Oct.30th. xD

Except this one, which is fully the best (a must have) :

This Glass screen protector cover all the SP1000 SS screen totally fully !

Does it cover the home button too? That's the main thing I don't like about the glass protectors I've seen. It only covers the visible screen area and leaves that bottom part with the home button or dot fully exposed. The plastic protector that came with the SP1000 covers the home dot.
