New TOL A&K DAP : the AK Ultima SP1000

Thanks creditingkarma and mmxxm.

I will probably be using the 1000m more at home than on the go, as since moving last year I don't have an audio setup in the house. So basically it will be my only music source other than my existing music stored on my NAS.

Therefore any interest in an dac/amp would be more of the desktop type than portable. More than happy to audition some at a local dealer to see if any benefits but can it be used with any desktop headphone amp or only ones with certain inputs? What cables and connections are used?

Hello again,

I see you to are in Scotland.

For a desktop solution I tend to agree with poster creditingkarma in suggesting a tube amp. I have the Icon Audio HP8mkii that is excellent with the SP1000m, as it is a good alternative from solid state and many tracks to my ears sound superior but it's all personal taste.

Icon are based in the UK also that keeps costs down amongst other things. Tube rolling can be fun (and expensive).

Good luck.

Any headphone amp will work. You can run from the 3.5mm to rca inputs just set it to line out and find the level that works best. 2v is the standard for most home audio equipment. You can take a look at the violectric amps they are pretty good or the Pro iCan. It all is really down to budget and what headphones you are driving. I can say that I have never heard the LCD 4z sound better than it did out of the Hugo TT2 at the store when I auditioned it.

Cheers guys.

I have always wanted to go down the valve route, the nearest I got was the Unison Research Unico was is a hybrid integrated and it had a lovely sound. It is a valve preamp and solid state power but the tubes were not visible.

Thanks for the Icon tip. I have also read up on the Pathos Aurium and Cayin Ha-1a mk2 which are in a similar price bracket. How long do tubes tend to last?

If you pick one up for me, I'll reimburse you! Shipping, etc...

Will look around, but initial looks on some of the websites don't show it in the larger Tokyo stores, i.e. Bic Camera and Yodobashi. If I find it, I'll shoot you a PM.

The shipping on the Dignis case is a killer. $21.

The A&K case is $150, so the Dignis case at $130 plus $21 shipping is the same price. I don't know what the customs fees and / or duties would work out to.

Oh, if they ship to US then I will just order it, duh... Thanks... lol

What is the maximum size memory card that can fit in the 1000 or 1000m? I'm going to upgrade from a 240ss which has 256gb internal and supports 256gb external for a total of 512gb. I'm disappointed that the the 1000m only has 128gb (basically you have to spend $600 more for another 128gb!).
All AK players can support up to 2TB cards. The 512GB are the largest currently readily available for purchase. The SP1000, SP1000M and even the AK240 will support those cards.

The Dignis case is somewhat better than the stock A&K case. Covers the edges better, button pushing is a bit easier. Certainly looks better (I got a brown leather one that "wears"). They ship to the US but we don't have customs or duties. Fits perfectly in my VanNuys belt case as well. Now I'm speaking of the SPK version, but assume the smaller versions will work the same.

Interesting and good to know. Where you have found 512GB? In searching the largest I've found is 400GB.

$600 is the price difference between the 1000m and the 1000m gold. The gold has 128gb more storage.
It has a different sound signature, I prefer the blue.

PNY makes a 512GB microSD card. If you are in the US, it is actually on sale today at Best Buy for $149.99 - https://www.bestbuy.com/site/pny-elite-512gb-microsdxc-uhs-i-memory-card/6319641.p?skuId=6319641

Samsung announced a 512GB card at the Note 9 launch, but I haven't seen it on sale yet.

Thank you, Jason. I was just about to reply asking if anyone knows whether the PNY is compatible (only because BB just has one solitary review from a customer who didn't have any luck with a Samsung Note 9) but now that I realize who made the suggestion, I'm just going to buy it. :)

First time I see a vote for the blue - yay!

Hey, I see there's a black onyx as well - does that one have a different sound signature as well?
I don't think so, I think it's just a black version of the blue, but I'm sure Jason could answer definitively.
