Jason,
Are you planning a pre-order for Ragnarok or will it just drop on your site when shipping starts?

Ok, what's a first article board? I assume a small test run of the final board, but just curious.

In plain english it means a test order to establish if the vendor has gotten all of your requirements right or not.  You can send a vendor specs and drawings but that doesn't mean they'll be followed correctly, so a first article is checked/tested against the design specs for a part to make sure everything is right before placing large production orders.

Yep, pretty close. In our case, we send all the parts and boards to our board house in Simi Valley, usually together with a hand-built production sample. They build 4-5 "first articles" to ensure they're putting all the parts in the right place. We then check the first articles against the performance of the production sample. If they are good, then the order is released to production.

This is obviously more important on high-production products. If you're building, say, 2500 Modis, you want to make sure the surface-mount programming is getting everything in the right place. If one is messed up, they are ALL messed up. With Ragnarok, the products are thru-hole and hand-stuffed on a push line, at much lower quantities.

Not to get derailed with the technical nitty-gritty, but is there a benefit to hand-stuffed through-hole in this application?  Am I wrong to think that machines are ready to put us all out of a job because they are just better (and cheaper) at this stuff, even in small quantities?

Machines lack the soul these (Norse) Godly products require for optimum performance

Yes! There is a very simple reason: I really really really really really really don't want to delay Ragnarok again to redesign it for surface mount.
