My rough translation of http://avic.livedoor.biz/archives/51239509.html:

High fidelity audio firm Luxman announces the successor to the Luxman P-1 will be the Luxman P-1u!

Unlike the many amplifiers which include external power supply and DACs, this model is a traditional high-quality analogue headphone amplifier. It includes an ODNF feedback circuit.

In Ver3.0 upgrade:

Continual effective output 2W+2W/8Ω, 1W+1W/16Ω, 500mW+500mW/32Ω and 27mW+27mW/600Ω

Input sensitivity/input impedance
unbalanced: 1.0V/26KΩ and balanced: 1.0V/67KΩ

Total harmonic distortion 0.0025% (1KHz), 0.02% (20Hz~20KHz)

Frequency range 20Hz~20KHz (+0, - 0.1dB), 5Hz~170KHz (+0, - 3.0dB)

Signal-noise ratio 115dB (IHF-A)

Input/output

Input: 1 balanced pair, 1 unbalanced pair

Output: 2 headphone jacks and 1 through φ6.3 RCA jack

Power/dimension/weight: 19W/40 (W) ×82 (H) ×408(D) mm/8.3Kg

The price rose to ¥189,000, but it seems that the sound quality also improved. Available for pre-reservation at DstyleSHOP in Japan!

(Sales begin in August)

Note the reduced weight and power consumption compared to the now obsolete P1, as well as the silver coloring for this unit. Of course, I am eager to hear reviews once this unit actually hits the market.

No Balanced headphone output.
What a pity!

Thanks for the heads up and the translation. I read through the specs and candidly, they seem like minor changes from the original P1 for the most part, especially as relates to the sound. Can you explain why you consider the sound quality improved?

Yeah that's kind of bizarre. But what a sexy silver piece of gear.

You know you've been away from head-fi for too long time when lack of balanced outputs is considered bizarre (despite the fact that not a single headphone in production comes with a balanced cable and most require an expensive after-market upgrade to become balanced).

That quote was part of the text I was translating. I have not heard the P-1u, and it appears the author of the original article has not either.

Its output power ratings are identical to the Luxman P-200, both of which are half that of the first-generation P-1 (at the given impedances):

The P-200's rated output: 2W+2W/8Ω, 1W+1W/16Ω, ½ W+ ½ W/32Ω

The original P-1's rated output: 4W+4W/8Ω and 2W+2W/16Ω, 1W+1W/32Ω, 500mW+500mW/64Ω, 53mW+53mW/600Ω

I'd like to see an internal shot of this new P-1u. I expect to have one here the moment it hits this side of the pond, but, given my tendency to break things when I open them, I'd likely not be opening it up to take internal photos.

If one turns up at the local Stax dealer, I'll see if I can't persuade them to crack it open. I'm sure someone will post pics on a Japanese blog sooner or later though. $2k-ish is a bit steep though IMO, even though it's Luxman. Mind you, I haven't gotten around to trying the P-200, I've been completely slack.

Looks like the P-1u is available from AudioCubes. Here.

$2099 is a big price jump over the original, so hopefully there is a corresponding improvement in the sound quality. Does anybody know whether using a voltage transformer will have a negative effect on sound quality?

Why, oh why has it no balanced outs...
