Hello everyone!

About a year ago I purchased a pair of Astro A40s. Before that point all I was using was cheap headsets/ear buds I would purchase at Walmart. I thought sound was sound, and that music would be the same through any media it was put through. Immediately after purchasing the A40s, I realized how wrong I was. I never realized just how much a great pair of headphones can do, and the way music can make you feel when it's presented in a proper way.

For a very long time I thought I had found one of the best the audio world had to offer me through the A40s. Now I'm not so sure. My Astro's mixamp recently broke, and instead of spending 140$ to get a new one, I'm considering buying a quality pair of headphones (not a headset) and buying an external mic. I've done a bit of research (even though most of it is moot because I don't understand a lot of it) but right now I'm looking at the Beyerdynamic DT990 250 omh pro.

I have a few questions for you all:

1. The A40s and the DT990s are both around the same price range, and both feature the open ear style, and both seem to be good quality. In terms of listening to music, would I really hear a difference in audio between the two? Would it be minimal, or substantial?

2. I don't really understand DACs and AMPs. It sounds to me like all they do is make the volume in the headphones louder. I'm almost 100% positive this can't be the case. What exactly does each do?

3. Is there any drawback to buying a 2-in-1 DAC+AMP over buying them seperately?

4. If I do end up buying the DT990s, should I buy a DAC/AMP as well? If so, any recommendations?

5. Are there any better quality headphones under 350$ than the DT990s that would be worth the price?

I've heard the type of music you listen to greatly effects the type of headphones you should purchase. Unfortunately my taste in music is very odd. I enjoy almost everything from Beethoven to Skrillex. I do listen to more electronic music than anything else though, so good bass is a must.

I apologize for the length of the post, and the number of questions; however, I want to make sure what I'm getting is right for me and that I will be satisfied with the product the first time around. Overall I'm willing to spend <500$ for everything, but if I can achieve superb sound quality with less money, I'm all ears. (heh).

1. Gigantic difference.

2. A DAC is basically external sound card. An amp is the one amplifying the sound (make the sound louder)

3. Amp/dac combo is usually cheaper, but has limited option (you can't upgrade separately) and if one section is broken, other section becomes nonfunctional as well (most of the time, you can't use amp/dac combo as just amp use only unless it is some expensive one)

4. If you buy Beyerdynamic DT990 32ohm version instead of 250ohm version, you can even use it on your portable player / smartphone. However, using proper external dac with better amp can improve the sound further.

5. A lot, Sony MDR-R1 or upcoming MDR-10, AKG K701/K702/Q701. Some people regards DT880 as better than DT990. I mean, there are so many of them near $350 these days.... you gotta search them yourself.

Are we taking about a Windows PC? xBox? PS3?
Is this audio setup for gaming? music? movies?
I'm fairly sure (best guess) the DT990s are better sounding headphones then the A40s
DAC - Digital to Analog Converter, there are DAC chips in just about any device that is involved in audio.
On Head-Fi, when someone talks about a DAC, usually there are referring to an external device with a USB and/or S/PDIF (optical or coaxial) input and a headphone amplifier, a DAC may or may not come with a built in headphone amplifier.
An regular analog audio signal usually has to be increase in strength to be able to move the diaphragm in a headphone (or speaker),
that is where the amplifier comes into play.
A combined DAC & amplifier is cheaper then buying a separate DAC and Amp.
With a separate DAC & amplifier, there is no electrical interference (best guess) between the DAC and amplifier.
There are other good headphones headphone that would offer a more balanced sound, over the DT990s strong bass & treble
