I am really interested in the DT880/600ohm as well, but I would like to hold off on buying an amp/DAC for a couple months if possible.
 
Will my old school (80s) stereo receiver have enough power to drive these at reasonable levels from the headphone jack?

Most old receivers have enough power to drive headphones. You should be fine.

Definitely not. The headphone jacks on speakers are usually just an afterthought. Besides, the jack on the 880s is probably too large.

It doesn't have enough power out of the headphone jack. You better use your old receiver, while you get the Amp/Dac.

hey pwnasaurus. check out proaudiostar for the DT880s the prices with shipping to canada are cheaper than the headphones alone on most sites.

As I've gotten deeper in the audio hobby, I've found that waiting a bit and getting the best equipment I can possibly afford has worked out best.  Regrets cost more than waiting.
