New - Cowon Plenue S

Honestly, after owning the Plenue 1 for over a year, I have no doubts that Cowon will continually release improved firmware. The fact that Cowon's latest P1 firmware (2.15) was released more than a year after release demonstrated to me that they don't give up on making iterative improvements on a product. The Plenue S already has its first firmware release only a few months after launch, so it seems they're going the same direction with it, even if the launch 1.0 firmware was much more refined and functional than the P1's equivalent at launch.

absolutely... I have much less problems with the S (and the P) than I do with my iPad and iPhone and they are very reliable... the concentration on just music really does remove so much potential for crap!

I'm having a fun time playing around with the eq presets. Does anyone know what the different BBE settings mean and do (ie BBE, BBE headphone 1/2/3 etc...)

BTW obvious to some but eq will not work with DSD as it is native. Eq is only for pcm

I'm interrested, too, for what These BBE effects are good and how they sound!

this on the Cowon site explains it best
I don't use the pre-set ones but rather the user defined ones starting with  the 10 band EQ filter (chasing each band between narrow, normal and wide as well as changing the middle frequency makes a big difference) and then I add some of the BBE setting, the Mach3Bass and the reverb. The chorus setting always seems to make things worse.

Please keep in mind that 90% of my listening is live grateful dead recordings of variable quality and I find the ability to combine the above can work absolute flipping' miracles!!! I think the BBE setting itself does sharpen the sound, and the Mach3Bass setting really extends and shapes the bass so I set these both in a range of +5 to 8 whereas reverb I set at no more than +2. Where the recording was originally made as a soundboard cassette (rather than reel to reel or multitrack) I also use the MP Enhance switch - this is designed for MP3s but it works well for the more limited recordings made onto cassette.

The 10 band filters I set by hearing but broadly I set variants on 'U shapes'.

I have 8 different user settings and this covers all my needs (you can set up to 16).

When I listen to a proper studio recording - esp at 24/96 and 192 then I leave the 10 band EQ alone or tweak a couple of the bands by no more than +1 and just set the BBE and Mach3Bass in the range of +2 to 3.

Once you have worked out what each setting does in combination you can adjust 'on the fly' very easily. I can't praise the potential of these settings to make poor recordings sound bloody amazing!

Hope this helps

Thanks, seems good to have it, if I would need it (especially for live recordings, because for Studio recordings I think I will only need 10 band EQ)
