New Beyerdynamic T5p 2nd generation

I have four headphones but only one head and i think it is important to know where to come from.
First was the DT770 and then the T5p. The bass is absolutely ok for me on the mk1 version, especially in after-working hours with bass heavy music because i dont want the slam in that moment.
Then the DT1770. I used this one exclusively with the leather pads because of recording and listening very silent. But the readjustment is just too time consuming. Now we have the T5p mk2. (Almost) everybody is happy about the more bass compared to mk1. This is true but not so important for me and the big surprise is how stuff like backround vocals for examples are presented. I think the terminus at head-fi is this holographic thing. I hear it especially with current songs of Ellie Goulding or Loreen for example. So is this appreciably better - i dont know but for me yes.

Thanks for your impressions. It sounds like you're describing the sound stage and imaging of the T5P2s. Is there anything else you like better about the T5P2 than the DT-1770?

Mine was delivered yesterday and here are my first impressions. Comfort is first-rate, although the diameter of the earpads is a little less than the AKG K550, which i also own. I have only listened through the Chord Hugo, but the sound is marvellous. Huge soundstage, very nice bass and the treble is detailed but not harsh or etched. The total sound has this darkish 'tone', which is very much natural IMO.

I keep you posted after burn-in and after listening from my Sony Xperia Z5.

Has anyone compared the T1.2 to the T5p.2.  Other than the ohm difference are they the same? I found the T1.2 available for $300 cheaper. Thanks

I have the same request. There's not a lot of info offering a direct comparison of the 2. I've been debating between them for a few days. I realize ones an open design and ones closed but would like to know how that manifests in the sound signature. I currently have the original T5p and really like them except for the anemic bass. Because of this I'm considering the T1 second generation (I've actually got an order in on Amazon but it can be changed) as an option but if the bass in the T5p 2nd Gen is comparable I'd consider upgrading mine. I like the portability of the T5p but overall sound quality is more important. Unfortunately where I live precludes trying them out.

Thanks to those out there who have experience with both the second generation models.

This thing is a revelation! It's a cliché, but I'm rediscovering my collection, and I'm listening the genres that I didn't as much before I got these. Acoustic stuff like jazz and classical are really springing into life. So.....this is hi end? Magnifique!

Yes, one is open and the other is closed, but they are closer in sound signature than you might think. I have both, and I have to say that, they have more in common than they are different. What's different, is actually quite subtle as well. For example, the T1.2 sounds a little more open, well, because it's open (or semi-open, whatever that means). The T5p.2 sounds a little more in your head. The T5p.2 has more isolation, and the T1.2 still lets you hear what's going on around you, but I guess you already know that. I have the benefit of testing them from the same DAC/amp, the Chord Mojo, where it is capable of driving both comfortably. I use only the short cable from the T5p.2 on the T1.2 to conduct the tests. However, I wouldn't say that I have to check which headphone I'm wearing to be sure which one I'm listening to, but they are close enough that the decision to pick which one comes down to the situation and functional need, e.g. do I need isolation or not. In a quiet environment, The T1.2 does sound a bit cleaner, if you must know in absolute terms, which one is superior. In the end, my preference is to pick the T1.2 first, but if I really need to keep the music only to myself, I pick the T5p.2. I wouldn't regret getting both and I wouldn't feel I'm losing anything by picking the other for a particular situation. Both are super comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and the removable cables are a godsend.

I changed AH-D7000 for T5p.2 gen - I hope that good opinions that I have read in this topic are true ;)

Has anyone tried these with an iBasso DAP and if so could they benefit from a portable amp? I recently upgraded to the t5p v2 from the PSB MAU1 headphones and admit I was concerned I would not notice much difference in quality as I really liked my MAUs and reviews of those phones were very positive. Well, I am concerned no more as I am a little surprised how good these sound. My only concern is it seems like even on high gain with my newly acquired iBasso DX80 I am on the higher end of the volume scale. My problem is I have not owned enough high end gear to know if this is normal or not or if I am potentially missing a little better quality. I have been using a Fiio X5 which seemed to require less volume but I realize the volume scale may be different as I assume the IBasso DX80 is at least if not more powerful than the Fiio.

Since I take these everywhere with me in my man purse (camera bag/laptop bag) if I am going to get an amp I probably would start out with a portable one if needed, and that is where I would really value some comments because I have no idea if there would be any improvement over something that sounds pretty good to me. Even if a very small improvement it would be worth it and of course recommendations would be valued. I am sure down the road I would probably get a regular headphone amp provided they would be even a little more improved than a portable amp.

On a totally unrelated note can anyone tell me if the headband of Beyerdynamic phones are fairly sturdy? The reason I asked is the one disappointment I have is that the t5p v2 are not that portable. My PSBs could fold enough to fit in a segment of my camera bag and I can fit the t5p v2 phones if I put a little pressure on the headband to squeeze them into my bag. Can these easily break or are they fairly sturdy?

I haven't tried a portable amp but the T5p's seem to be sensitive to source/amps.

I was using a good quality amp/source (Yulong A18/D18).  The T5p's sounded very good but my Audeze LC2's sounded better.  I recently switched to a Burson Conductor Virtuoso.  The Audeze continue to sound great but not much change.  The T5p, on the other hand, now sound sublime.  They are blowing the doors off my Audeze.  The T5p and the Burson is the best combo I've ever heard.  Both amps have plenty of power so I don't think the wattage has anything to do with it.  It just seems like the T5p's gel better with some equipment than others.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think the Solist would work since I have to watch my pennies a little. My wife had a very serious stroke a couple of months ago and her recovery is going to be a very long process. Financially I am taking a huge hit (she was a nurse) but my music, along with my faith, is what is helping me get through everything. I don't mind spending what I need to spend for quality as now music almost a matter of survival for me, but I have to really manage my funds carefully. I will be spending a ton of time in a nursing home so a portable amp is probably where I should start with but I am not ruling out a powered and portable purchase if it helps improve quality. Sorry for getting a little personal but all of a sudden music is more than just a hobby.

Very sorry to hear about your wife and my thoughts and wishes towards her recovery.  I totally get the music taking on even more importance.  I'm more a music person than audiophile, and music has always been, and will always be one of the biggest joys of my life.

I'm not sure if the Soloist would make a lot of difference or not.  It was kind of dumb luck I stumbled upon the Conductor/Virtuoso combo.  I thought it would benefit the LCD 2 more when I decided on it.  I didn't think a portable phone would scale or else be so picky with sources/amps.

The T5p sound is now as full as the LC2, which is what I loved about the LC2 but there's more mid bass punch.  Yet somehow, they are incredibly detailed without ever being harsh.  My Yulong was a more musical/warm sound whereas the Burson is more analytical.  I expected to hear more details.  I didn't expect the additional fullness of sound.  I also find it odd that the improvements I see are specific to the T5p and not the LCD2.  So I'm a bit stumped on what to recommend since I don't really understand the reason for the improvement in sound.

Perhaps you could pick up a used soloist and try it out?  That way, if it doesn't blow you away, you could resell and not be out much.  (My Conductor/Virtuoso was used)

Sorry to hear about your wife.I also wish you the best.

Considering how easy these are to drive, you can get a really good portable dac/amp used for $200-300.

Good options include:
* Oppo HA-2
* Geekout V2 (there are several iterations of this one)
* Thebit's Opus #11 (This is a new one, but apparently very good.)

Good idea. I just ordered the Fiio e17 Alpen portable amp as it is pretty inexpensive but will be saving for something better.  If I had to choose between a fuller or more detailed sound I probably would pick fuller because that may give a more "like being there" experience.

I like all kinds of music and used to listen to classical a lot more than I do. I think what is keeping me from classical music is having the right gear. I remember being emotionally moved listening to classical music through a tube amp many years ago. I think a "full" sound for classical music would be especially good.

One thing that is tough with these forums is trying to imagine what something sound likes using descriptive terms. In New Mexico not many places to try out gear. With my headphone upgrade I may start getting some more HDtracks music. I only bought two albums through them and was very unimpressed with a Righteous Brothers album and there sampler did not sound much different when listening to mp3 versions of some of the same tunes. I am guessing it will be a different story with the T5p v2 (I think the Righteous Brothers Album was just not a great remastered recording).
