New Audio Technica Woodies: ATH-W1000Z announced

I am very sorry for this belated post. I own both the ATH W3000anv and ATH W1000z. The W3000anv has more body and a thicker sound in the mids and the lower bass. It sounds more analogue and fuller in female as well as male vocals. Important distinction: The W1000z cannot beat the euphoric vocals of the W3000anv which many of us desired. The W1000z is slightly brighter than the W3000anv. IMHO, the W3000anv is definitely much better. The W1000z is still a very good headphone for the price. The W1000z has somewhat similar sound signature to the W3000anv but it is different. In any case, it is very difficult to find a W3000anv new or in mint condition. It appears some of the used W3000anv for sale have minor or major cosmetic scratches to the beautiful wooden ear cups. I believe, cosmetics are just as important as the sound when it comes to pride of ownership.

Wow!!!  Listening to the W1000Z for first time.  For me, this is the best woodie so far...

Which amp or DAC are you pairing your W1000Z to?

Geek Pulse + Shanling PH300.  The combo the very smooth, lush, with the very beautiful tone of AT woodies.  But it has a bit better clarity and soundstage than other woodies I have/had (W1000, W1000X, W3000ANV).

If AT had made a closed-back planar, it would sound like the LCD XC. Imagine a typical mid-focussed AT sound signature (AD900, W5000, W1000X) but with a warmer tilt towards the bass.

Would it be fair to say the W1000Z are much more easier to drive than the LCD XC?

My w1000z will arrive next Monday. I am excited. I have been looking for a perfect pairs of headphones for office use for many years. I currently have Oppo PM-3 and Fostex TH-X00 with iFi Micro stack (iUSB2, iPurifier2, iDSD, iTube and iCan) in my office.  I used to have ATH-A900X and AKG K553 Pro. I hated the AKG. They sound "fakery neutral" if you know what I mean. I love the A900X but decide to sell them when I got the Oppo for financial reason. I still miss their soulful mid until this day. The Oppo are great office and travel headphones and overall better than the A900X, period. But they do not put soul back into the music. The Fostex are great too, but I learn from them that I am totally not a bass-head guy, even though the TH-X00 are not really bass-head for some people. I will probably sell them if I like the w1000z. At home, I still have my favorite iFi Retro 50 system and HD600. I think I have been looking for something like that. I read about Mr. Speaker Ether C and Flow C, but I do not have $1700 to spend yet. If I do, I will probably get HD800S first. The W5000 is a littler bit over my allowed budget, but I might upgrade later if I like w1000z.

P.S. My current iem is ATH-CK100Pro which AT Japan just replaced the cable and ship it back to the USA for free. I love AT.
P.S.S. I listen to a lot of Japanese 90's music and jazz, some electronica, some classical. That is probably one of the reason that I am leaning toward AT.

I got W1000Z today, and I can say that I like them a lot more than TH-X00 just after a few hours of listening. They do not sound as clean and as extended on both the high and the low as the TH-X00 but the warmness is great. They are definitely warmer than A900X but not lush like Grado headphones. The mid bass boost bothered me a little bit when I first listening to them, but it has now loosen up. They pair very well with my iFi DAC/amp too. I have a big head, so the wing headband is never a problem for me.

The only issue that I have is that it make me want to try W5000 ... :p How difference are they? Have anyone had a chance to compare them.

Congrats on your purchase!!  The W1000Z is indeed lovely.

BTW, if you try the W5000, let us know. :)  I have not tried myself, but most accounts say it is more polarizing, love-or-hate than all W1000's...

The ATH W1000Z is with me now. It has retro styling, clamps a bit hard on my head, but what it does very well indeed is reproduce music. It was a huge surprise for me when I heard it. A headphone that is closed back and produces a really nice tone that has none of the squashed cramped qualities of many closed headphones. It's deserving of far more attention than it has had up til now. I wonder whether in years to come these will become collectable. They are that good.

How do these compare to the W3000ANV?
