I had them both for a while.  At the time I felt they were very close.  The thing that kicked my NAD out was its sheer size, I was looking for a work-rig DAC.  At home, with no size constraints though, I found the NAD the better listen for longer periods.

You may be right about the BDA-2 being a bit more transparent, but I feel it's a bit too lean in the low end. I went for the most natural sounding dac on my current rig in the end; it's very difficult to make clear conclusions.

 
Yeah, the low end is one of the big things I love about the BDA-2. Great sub-bass performance and so much better than the W4S DAC-2 (actually not even close here; as far as DACs go that is) and on par with the PWD2 in that regard with direct A-Bing. Any more bass would be more than what I consider as "neutral". 

 
I guess another preconceived notion (or prejudice) I've had with NAD that held me back is that my experience with them in the past 20 years (now I really feel old as I see you're about that age

)  is that they are a great entry level (many of their older CD players) to mid-fi audiophile company. Could be that the M51 is a great DAC and I hope to hear it soon, but if it has more bass than the BDA-2 or PWD2 (which I consider about equal in terms of bass impact), then I'm glad I went with the Bryston.

It's funny you'd say this, because I've always considered NAD as mediocre compared to its other competitors throughout the years as well, but was quite surprised about the M51 when I heard it. Definitely not a big fan of the name, but I'm not loyal to anybody as long as good competition exists!
 
I totally agree that the Bryston BDA-2 is quite a jump over the W4S 2, one of my friends had it and I found it much too colored for a reference dac.

Hey, that's good to hear...always happy to see a Canadian company like NAD (and Bryston) do well. Now I'll have to see if I can get to hear an M51 sooner than later.

Well - in your opinion.  IMO all these DACS in this price range are all side grades at best.  Each one doing things only slightly better than the other.  In blind test.  I'm betting my dime to anyones donuts no difference can be told.
 
I sold the Master 7 and selling the PWD2 as well.  Time to step it up and see what the 5K DACS can do.

Which ones are you targeting?

Can I just point out NAD was originally founded in England, UK and much of the M51 R&D was done in the UK as well - not that it makes any difference to the topic being discussed

Yes, NAD was indeed a British brand, but they eventually got bought by a canadian company that has PSB speakers and NAD under their belt.

Well, my April 2013 LCD3s developed channel imbalance. The right channel sounds about 3-5db softer than the left and sounds muffled. My other headphones sound fine through the same setup.
 
Pretty disappointing. Hopefully Audeze's support service is as good as others say. Part of me wonders if I should just put them in storage until Audeze can figure out what's wrong with their parts.
 
Edit: Sent my headphones to Audeze. Excellent customer service. Both drivers replaced and my LCD3s sound better than ever. 11/10 experience.

This being my first post here, so it's a pity that I feel the need to respond in this manner, but gosh...
 
...That's a bit of an over reaction isn't it?
 
This problem you report could be something as simple as a bad connection somewhere -and yet you appear to be making the assumption that there are massive design defects, or quality control issue that all products sold are suffering from.
 
Get the problem checked out first before jumping to conclusions!  -Because it's quite possible this is a simple issue which would be easily fixed.
