Wasn't it a change of the dampening material? Could have sworn the original was felt and the new is foam?
As I've mentioned a few times, going from denser felt to light foam (if it is in fact light foam) couldn't account for the differences people are hearing ime. That alone would take them in the opposite direction. Something else must have changed that made it so they didn't need as much damping because the driver is now performing better on it's own. It seems like more diaphragm tension is a good guess, but it's hard to say.
