So you think lcd3 is too expensive and has a "stupidly high profit"? Believe me in the hifi business, of all components of a system, the headphone, even as expensive as lcd3 is the least profitable equipment. I think the lcd3 is expensive, but it worth every penny I paid for. Welcome to hifi world.

You raise a good point. I was comparing it to other headphones, not amps, dacs or speakers or the like. Juxtaposed against other headphones, I think my opinion that it has a high profit margin is justified, but remember it's only my opinion and not backed with hard evidence.
I'm glad you think it's worth the whole amount because I'm planning to get one myself down the line.

I was only lamenting the potential positive side effects on the industry if such a world class headphone was priced much more competitively, like the LCD-2 and HE-500. One can still dream...

And apologies for the long post. I, unfortunately, enjoy writing but rarely post, meaning I can ramble and ramble...

This is definitely one of the biggest improvements over the LCD-2s. I'm hearing sound staging in my rig that competes with my T1s (and slightly better than my now sold HE-6s). I thought this was a limitation of orthos, but I guess not.

The limitation is probably weight.

All those magnets sure are heavy...

Making them electromagnets and adding what amounts to an energizer box would be interesting.

Are there any other kinds of magnets which are lighter but reasonably strong?

Won't that make them become electrostats headphones?

More magnetism = greater control = better soundstage? Dunno.

The magnetic field affects your brain to believe the soundstage is better than it really is.

Today Ethan(athenaesword), my friend Lento and I did a round of A/Bing of two LCD3s, with some decent classical and jazz recordings. Mine's the one just shipped back early this week, and Ethan's a (after burn in) non-veiled LCD3. We have two EAR909s side by side balanced driving the LCD3s, playing same tracks simultaneously. The "newer" one is slightly a bit more transparent with a bit more air and layers to the sound. Well we think we at least find out one reason why "the non-veiled LCD3s get better". See the covers over the drivers inside the pads? And mine does has a pair of slightly firmer pads.

You may have noticed that we had different cables on the LCD3s in the last picture. Yes, we also A/Bed ALO chain mail cable and the Q audio cable. The result? To make it brief, the Q cable is more realistic with better micro dynamics, and the ALO cable more musical and has a touch of golden glare to the sound which I really enjoy. I'll report back more impressions after I spend more time with them.
