A friend of mine is looking for some phones. He wants to spend ~$60 but can stretch if he really needs to. The main music he listens to is Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and Mars Volta. "Spacey ****" was his definition.

His main source will be his computer and ipod. I think his comp just has an audigy in it or something so keep that in mind.

I recommended him some sr-60s but i know there may be osmething better. Lemee know what yall think and ill let him know.

Thanks

I have the HD 555 which are easy to drive (50 OHM) and will certainly do well with "spacey" sound. However they are a bit over your friends budget, but I think its worth the investment. By reading all the articles in this forum I'd say the Grados are better for more "confined" music.

How important is portability? Is buying used an option? I guess that for "spacey ****" some circumaural cans would work best (soundstage and all), but these are out of the budget for the most part. Years ago Sennheiser's HD535 was blown out for approx. $60, maybe some NOS sample of the old 535/545/565 series still is to be found.

I listen to a lot of Radiohead and Pink Floyd and such and really like the Senn Hd497's I just got. They have a nice seperation on that type of music if that makes any sense.

He may prefer the HD485 to the other two

For sure, go Koss - PortaPro, KSC75, KSC35, etc. They've got a pleasing, fun sound that most people really enjoy, the performance is incredible for the price, easy to drive, they keep a lower profile than most "audiophile" cans, and they are fairly comforatable. Haven't tried the sr60, but based on my experience with the sr225, hd497, and hd555 I would definately go Koss for this recommendation, no contest! Heck, I may even prefer the PortaPros to the other cans I listed based on sound quality alone
