I have a Zero DAC/amp (the old version) that I can't get any sound from and I want to try and find out why. I do not know if I'm connecting it wrong or if the Zero itself is broken.
I connect it to my computer with a toslink cable. PC -> Zero. I have Windows 7, and I am using the realtek soundcard that is build in on my mainboard. The power button lights up when I turn the Zero on, and so does the optical light. I can hear the Zero because it makes this humming sound. I connect my headphones but I won't get any sound. I can hear a weak "shhhh" noise if I turn up the sound (turn the volume knob on the zero to 100%). If I turn on the preamp, the "shhhh" noise is louder and I can hear it with a low volume level.
If I take the toslink cable from the Zero and plug it in my Z5500 speakers, I will get sound.
Is there anything I could look for if I open the Zero? I'm very new to this stuff, so in that case, it would be great if someone could show me a picture of what I should be looking for.
