I'm looking for a pair of open circumaural headphones that are efficient enough to be driven from a FiiO E7 (as a DAC), and possibly the FiiO E7/E9 combo in the future. My price range is around USD$200-300. Some examples of what I'm looking for are DT990's, AD900's, K702's etc. I'm making the upgrade from HD 555's so I'm not interested in the Senn's of my price range. I listen to a bit of everything so it must be versatile.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks.

Best for under 300 usd is the SR225 from Grado in my book, but those aren't circumaural

circumaural and not Senns; AKG K240 are pretty good allrounders on my opinion, great bang for the buck. If you'd spend a little bit more, Denon D2000's are very nice.

Your title may be throwing us.  When you say "balanced", do you mean nice sounding with a lot of different music or do you mean xlr connectors for balanced operation?

Thanks for the suggestions Proglover, I've tried a friends SR325i's with comfies but they weren't my cup of tea. I don't know much about Denon so I'll have a look into them.

@ bbophead, by "balanced" I mean nice sounding with most genres.

HD650's can be had for $328, only $28 over budget. maybe the OP can save up another 28 bucks. aren't the HD600 even cheaper than the 650?
