[N00b] Best cans for a basshead on a budget?

I should mention that these will be used for portable listening sometimes... my research indicates that the D2000s may not be ideal for that purpose.

Otherwise, they seem really solid... apparently edging out the HD650s.

Yea, I'm leaning towards the DT770s at the $160 shipped mark. Are there any offerings from Sony worth considering? How do those HFI-550s compare to the Beyers? They look like a nice deal, but lack that 'premium' look

I want to keep my options open and get some more opinions. D2000 doesn't seem to be ideal due to leakage and size.

I am thinking a closed, isolated headphone would serve me better at this point.

I would really like to order tomorrow... I want these cans ASAP

Guys --

I've decided to go with the JVC RX700s. People claim that they are remarkably similar to the D2ks, and bass-wise, they are supposedly really close to the DT770/80s without the recessed midrange. For $33, I guess I'll try them. If I don't like them, I can always return them and start over.

If someone can sway my opinion in 10 minutes, so be it. If not, expect to hear from me when I get them!

Thanks for all the help!

D2000s will not sound good without a decent amp. I'd suggest the JVC-RX700 as have others for a warm sound without the need for amplification.

For under $33 shipped what's not to like! They do sound very similar to the D2000, perhaps not quite as refined but then again I am comparing $300 D2000s plugged into a $600 PPX SLAM compared to $33 plugged into my $22 av-710 sound card.

What source are you using BTW?
