So, before I get the flak, I have been searching for a while and have deduced that the community here can not seem to reach a coherent decision regarding the best cans for bassheads with limited buying power.

For example, I read that the DT770 is great, but then I learn that they need an amp to shine. Those that don't have that kind of dough can probably swing the 'phones, but not the amp... and so on.

I listen to rap, dupstep, reggae, and some jazz. I also do some light gaming. Will be used on-the-go occasionally.

What are the experts' takes for some tight cans in the $150 range?

Ultrasone HFI 780.

The DT770 Pro 80 ohm is probably your best choice if you want excessive bass. You can get the cans now.. and the amp later... Specially if you have an X-fi or other relatively high performance sound card. (relative to on board, not to anything else)

Other phones with bass that don't need an amp at all:
ATH-M50
Denon D1001
M-audio Q40
Ultrasones

M-Audio Q40 or ATH-M50 would definitely be two good choices given your budget.

Skip a meal or two and reach for Denon D2000 at $200?

I read that the DT770s aren't actually the bass monsters that they're made out to be...

You're getting confused.

Beyerdynamic is really bad at giving different models numbers to different headphones. There are multiple DT770's

The ones that are bass monsters are the DT770 Pro 80ohm's.
These: Amazon.com: Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro-80 Closed Studio Headphones: Electronics

That, btw, is not a very good price on them.

HFI-550. Not as detailed as the HFI-780, but great at their price range. As with other HFIs, bass is never a problem.

Really really fun to listen to.

You can get them for under $100 + S&H from Amazon Marketplace sellers. Haven't had time to check other online stores, though.

EDIT: You can also try the Alienware OZMA 5s. They're rebranded HFI-550s. You can get the for around $80 + S&H from eBay.

Could always consider the JVC HA-RX700's, they put out tons of bass on my PC, but I use the EQ to achieve that. But at around $33 shipped on Amazon and Buy.com, might be worth a shot for ya. I've been extremely impressed, I actually ended up backing the bass off because it was shaking the cups and was too much for me overall. Sweet little set of cans for a super cheap budget, they have lower impedance so more devices can drive them easier, which is a big plus on a budget too...my SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio drives these cans really well imo. Just some food for though, I doubt they'll hold a candle to the DT770Pro 80ohm's bass-wise, but they put out plenty for me and then some. And I like my bass, but I don't like it to overpower the rest of the music/game/audio. Cheers.

the m50 is a good choice. They have plenty of bass and sound good with various genres. They dont need to be amped. They also bit your budget with room to spare.

So many suggestions... it's overwhelming!

How do the Denon and HFI offerings stack up to the DT770s? I could pull $200 if it's REALLY worth it.

What place has the best deals on headphones?

I've had the hfi-700 and pro-650, and listened to the hfi-680, pro 750 and Ed.9. I used to be an Ultrasone fan, but then I discovered the Denon 2000 (modded, of course).

Do yourself a favor and save up for them. They have a midrange clarity that the Ultrasones lack (except Ed 9). After 400 hours something happened and they sound absolutely incredible. I no longer search this site. I found what I wanted.

The bass in the Ultrasones *may* be more fun (ported box design), but the d2000s go deeper and cover a bigger, more natural range. It just sounds more sophisticated to me, than my pro-650 with Jenna Labs wire.
