So much for Fridays being a good day. Fell asleep listening to music on the 990's and when I woke up I moved my head and the left speaker cut out. I reached up and jiggled the cable and sure enough, the left started cutting in and out quite loudly I might add.
 
At least the seller has a decent exchange policy but still. Never would have expected a problem so soon.

I've had my 880 for 3 years or more and never had this problem. That was the premium though, different cable. I hope it's not some kind of Pro problem.

Isn't this a well known problem with the 990 Pro's, I think there's a review on Amazon UK where someone says they had the same problem happen three times with different 'phones and you often see Pro's crop up on ebay with the left driver not working.
 
I think the wires into the cup are unsupported so with the pull of the coiled cable they're under more stress so this can easily happen. If they are out of warranty it would be fairly easy to fix if you're handy with a soldering iron,  but as yours are a week old better to return.

I slept with my 880s on for 3 years. Not every night mind you but most nights.

It's two fold. It drowns out noise from outside, and having low level music playing hypnotizes me to some extent allowing me to sleep quite easily. I'm a bit of an insomniac by nature. If I play back music at a slightly higher volume, like on a weekend when I don't need to get up early, I can sleep a little longer but it also gives me vivid dreams that are influenced by the music I'm listening to.
 
I've noticed a few interesting facts on the rare occassion I've fallen asleep with a single song on repeat...When you wake up in the morning and hear that song playing, it sounds nothing like how you remember. I think your brain adapts and gets used to it, making it seem different. Like if you were in a red room for several hours, and then suddenly went into a white room, the walls might look blue instead of white, because your eyes were trying to adapt to the red color and make it look white.

You know, I wonder if it's a similar effect to what happens when you write the same word a ton of times and it stops seeming correct or the same as it was before. I wish I knew the actual name but I can't for the life of me recall at the moment.

I wish I could fall asleep with headphones on but HE-400/HE-500 isn't the best for that because of the weird connectors they use. I feel like my shoulder is trying to break it off sitting down much less sleeping.

One question please, why did you buy the DT990 if you have the DT880 ? 
 
You wasn't satisfied with the DT880 ? how is the sound compare to the DT990 ?

Too bad about your DT990's dude, I also fall asleep every night with headphones on but I can't sleep listening to the DT990 as they are pretty "lively" even when listening to Radiohead

Good luck with your next pair though, hopefully they will last you a little longer..

I don't want to wear my 880's into the ground, I like variety but love the Beyerdynamic sound, and I want to use my 880's more in my studio when I'm drumming at lower volume because of their open ness.
 
Also, I like the 990's a lot. It's like an 880 except tuned for entertainment rather than accuracy. The highs are similar but more forward, the lows the same but much more forceful. The 990's do without EQ, what I tend to do with the 880 with EQ when I want to rock out.
 
The sound in comparison is a little more V shaped but still without significant coloration, mids are very similar. Soundstage is a little better and a little more air in the sound. Bass is one of the best parts, it finally drives with authority compared to the 880 which is more laid back but accurate.
 
Amazon is being a pain and in spite of 2nd day air as my shipping option they still haven't shipped 2 days later. Thankfully the 990's only fail intermittently. I'm listening to them right now in fact, just trying not to turn my head too much so the cup doesn't cut out.
 
Now that the honeymoon is over so to speak I have EQ'd them. I started with a similar curve to the 880 but removed all bass enhancement and turned it into a purely negative EQ. IE doesn't boost, only cuts.
