BTW, with the DUM cable, how do I tell left from right after the red rubber band falls ?  :)

Red sharpie

Also, if you plug the left/right incorretly, just turn yourself around 180 degrees and face the opposite direction.

That's what I was doing but it became difficult to type without facing the desk after a while.

Have a read because they're not just 0's and 1's.  They're analog (voltage difference) representations of 0's and 1's.  If you don't believe it so be it but at least keep an open mind because that all digital signals are just representations of the on/off signals regardless of them being USB/SATA/Ethernet or not.  If error correction can be applied then the signal can be corrected but audio USB does not apply error correction.

Thanks.  Hope people will finally understand that there aren't any actual digital 0s and 1s. You can't find them anywhere because they don't exist. It's all analog voltage differences representing 0s and 1s, as you say.  And that belies those who say that if you receive the signal it has to be the same as the original signal because "it's digital".

Whether or not one USB cable is better than another is about as close to a religious question as you will find in audiophelia. Even testing methodologies are a sub-religion. Blind testing, double blind, ABX, measurements, objective vs subjective. It's quagmire. It's clear that some people feel they get better sound with cables, cabinets, dots, pebbles, vibration reduction feet, turntable pads, isolators, and other stuff. It's also clear that many people don't think much of some of this stuff.

Heck, even MrSpeakers sells a cable that "To our ears what sets DUM cables apart from our stock cable is a fuller, cleaner and more detailed sound with a deeper soundstage and a very organic upper register." I have the DUM cable and I have a home made cable for my Ether C, and I cannot tell the difference. My son did some blind testing with his LCD-3, Silver Dragon cable vs. stock LCD cable, and could not tell the difference. Does that mean there is no difference? No. It just means that we couldn't tell the difference. (OK, it's possible there is no difference)

So, bottomline: put this discussion about 1's and 0's to bed. No one will convince anyone of anything in a text based discussion. If you can tell the difference between a $299 cable and a $199 cable and you like the difference, then more power to you. If you can tell the difference between a $10 ethernet cable and a $1000 ethernet (or USB, or RCA, or Optical, or Coax, or whatever), and the difference is worth the money to you, then more power to you. Are you cooler is you have a $1000 cable? Probably not.

If you want to get into the minutiae of measurements vs subjective listening, I recommend you also visit a super audio site for best friends (google that if you don't know what I'm referring to).

Did you notice that MrSpeakers is also MrsPeakers? What does it mean?

More important that the USB cable, IME, is the quality of the digital source.  I'm going to start assembling a HTPC server with dedicated PCIe USB audio card - probably the JCAT.  The advantage there, assuming your DAC has dedicated USB power, is then you can disable bus power and only transmit data across USB - like an S/PDIF interface.  I tend to believe at that point, the USB cable itself becomes rather irrelevant.

I solemnly swear to never mention 0's and 1's again (n00b mistake); my apologies for having derailed the thread.

Though it is good to have some clarity on the matter; to think I spent all that time wringing out my cables after I unplugged them...

On a more related note, why are there so few reviews for the Ether C out there? Is it still too new? Seems like the Ether gets all the glory, in spite of a high performance closed planar magnetic being a more monumental feat.

Since the 1.1 is announced, and said to be shipped out around the time of the announcement, has it shipped before the announcement? And if it is, how far back did it start shipping? Just got the Ethers so would like to know that. Thanks.

Wow, who would have thought that cable vendors would try to convince us that cables make a difference! I'm in shock...
